Angela heard the low sound of several engines and looked through the front window. For an instant her body reacted before her mind did, tightening around the memory of ten cruisers arriving from both directions. Then she saw agents speaking quietly beside their vehicles and one woman showing identification to Mrs. Carter near the corner. Marcus stepped beside her and took her hand, not because Angela needed his permission to face what was outside, but because both of them remembered the last time unexpected vehicles had arrived on their street.

"It's different," Angela said softly.

"It is," Marcus replied. "But we can stay inside until they tell us what's happening."

Mrs. Carter stood on her porch wearing a shawl over her house dress. She watched the agents with the cautious attention of someone who had learned not to confuse any uniform with safety merely because it looked official. One of the agents approached, identified herself, and explained that officers were conducting a lawful operation nearby. Mrs. Carter asked whether she needed to leave her home, and when the agent said no, she settled into her rocking chair as if keeping watch over the roses had become a duty of its own.

The unexpected arrival came from the opposite direction. A police cruiser turned the corner fast enough to make its tires chirp against the pavement, then pulled to a stop near the Brooks driveway. Darren Holt stepped out wearing his uniform, face flushed, his movements abrupt rather than calculated. He had received word that outside investigators were preparing arrests and had apparently decided to confront the neighborhood whose complaints he blamed for his trouble.

"What is this?" he demanded, looking from the agents to the residents appearing on their porches. "You don't have authority to shut down my street. This is my jurisdiction."

Williams moved toward him without raising her voice. "Captain Darren Holt, Federal Bureau of Investigation. We have a warrant for your arrest. I need you to keep your hands visible and follow my instructions."

Holt looked at the credentials she displayed, then at the agents taking positions a short distance behind her. For the first time Angela had ever seen, his expression contained no ready performance of certainty. He appeared to be calculating whether he could talk his way out of the situation, invoke a superior officer, or make the people around him hesitate. The choices seemed to close one by one as Williams explained the warrant and directed him away from his vehicle.

"This is retaliation," he said loudly. "You're taking the word of a woman who interfered with police operations over a captain's lawful report."

"You'll have an opportunity to speak through counsel," Williams replied. "Right now, step away from the cruiser."

Holt glanced toward Angela's porch. She could see that he wanted her to respond, perhaps to shout or celebrate so he could describe the scene as personal revenge. Angela did neither. She remained beside Marcus behind the porch railing, remembering the pressure of asphalt against her cheek and the sound of Holt destroying her phone. Watching him finally receive lawful orders did not make those memories vanish, and she would not pretend it did.
