Marcus's phone buzzed with an urgent message. He read it quickly, then grabbed Aliyah's arm. "The security footage," he said. They finally preserved it for review. The secure review room felt sterile and cold as morning sunlight filtered through narrow windows.
Aliyah sat between Marcus and Nia at a long table, facing a wall-mounted monitor, where her entire future would soon be decided. Led investigator Dr. Janet Hoffman adjusted her glasses and opened a thick file folder. The security system automatically preserves footage for 30 days. Dr. Hoffman explained, "We've recovered the complete recording from 2:15 to 2:47 p.m. on the day in question." Across the table, administrator Patterson looked confident. "I trust this will confirm Miss Brooks initiated the violence.
Let's see what actually happened," Marcus said quietly. The screen flickered to life, showing the brick walkway from an elevated angle. Students moved normally across the frame, backpacks slung over shoulders, conversations flowing naturally. The timestamp read 2:21 p.m. Then Grayson appeared, walking purposefully toward the camera. He stopped near the narrow section of walkway and pulled out his phone.
Within seconds, Brett, Cody, and Tessa approached from different directions. their coordinating positions. Nia whispered on screen. Grayson pointed down the walkway and made spreading gestures with his hands. Brett moved to the left side. Tessa took the right.
Cody positioned himself directly behind Grayson. All four students then stood casually pretending to check their phones while blocking the entire walkway. This is clearly planned, Dr. Hoffman noted, making written observations. At 2:23 p.m., Aaliyah entered the frame. She walked normally until she saw the four students blocking her path.
She stopped, obviously confused. The audio was faint but audible. Grayson's voice carried clearly. Well, well, look who thinks she owns the place. Aaliyah tried stepping left.
Brett immediately moved to block her. She stepped right. Tessa shifted to cut off that path, too. Aaliyah backed up slightly, but Cody had already moved behind her. "She's trapped," Marcus said, his jaw tightening.
"You need to learn your place, scholarship girl," Grayson's voice continued from the speakers. "Time somebody taught you a lesson about embarrassing your betters on screen." Aaliyah remained perfectly still. "I just want to get to class. Please move. Make us move." Cody taunted. stepping closer.
The footage showed Aaliyah attempting to walk around them again. Each time, one of the four students blocked her path. Her body language remained defensive, hands visible, posture non-threatening. Note how she never assumes an aggressive stance, Marcus pointed out. That's textbook deescalation technique.
Then Grayson moved closer, his face inches from Aaliyah's. You think you're special because you won some cheap tournament? Your scholarship daddy isn't here to protect you now. Brett suddenly lunged forward and grabbed Aaliyah's backpack, yanking hard enough to jerk her sideways. Tessa immediately shoved her from the right, trying to knock her off balance.
