“How quickly you believe me now.”

Victoria swallowed.

“I didn’t know who you were.”

Damon waited.

The words hung there.

“I didn’t know who you were.”

Exactly.

He let the silence stretch.

Then:

“Would you have treated me differently if you had?”

Victoria realized too late that there was no safe answer.

“I…”

Damon nodded.

“Right.”

She stepped closer.

“Mr. Washington, luxury hotels deal with fraud constantly. We have responsibilities.”

“So why didn’t you check the reservation?”

“I believed—”

“You were shown identification.”

“I had concerns.”

“A valid corporate reservation.”

“Still—”

“A legitimate credit card.”

“Given the circumstances—”

“What circumstances?”

Her mouth closed.

Damon looked toward Ryan.

“Was I failing dress code?”

Ryan hesitated.

“No, sir.”

“Does the hotel have a jacket requirement?”

“No.”

“Membership requirement?”

“No.”

“Invitation-only access?”

“No.”

Damon turned back.

“Then what standard was I failing?”

Victoria’s eyes filled.

Around them, phones remained raised.

Damon did not like it.

He did not want this to become a public execution.

He looked at Jake.

“Please ask guests not to obstruct hotel operations with filming.”

Victoria looked relieved for half a second.

Then Damon added:

“They may preserve whatever footage they already took. Nobody is to confiscate or delete anything.”

Jake nodded.

“Yes, sir.”

Damon turned to Victoria.

“Your managerial authority has been suspended pending investigation.”

She went white.

“You’re firing me?”

“No.”

That surprised her.

“You are no longer to issue disciplinary instructions, modify guest records, access complaint files, alter schedules, or direct security until HR reviews what happened tonight.”

Victoria looked confused.

Perhaps she expected revenge.

Damon continued.

“You’ll be given a fair process.”

Her relief flickered.

Then he said:

“The process you denied me.”

That relief disappeared.

Sarah arrived twenty-five minutes later with Jennifer Martinez, Washington Hospitality’s chief human resources officer, and outside employment counsel.

The public drama ended there.

No reporters were invited into the lobby.

No television lights.

No triumphant speech.

Damon knew social media clips would spread anyway.

He did not need to turn the hotel into a courtroom.

Victoria was escorted to an executive conference room.

Not out of the building.

Ryan became acting manager for the night.

Jake filed a written security report.

Damon finally checked into the penthouse suite he had reserved.

He hated it.

Not the room.

The room was beautiful.

Floor-to-ceiling windows.

Los Angeles glittering below.

A sitting room larger than the first apartment he rented after leaving the Army.

A marble bathroom.

Fresh flowers.

Welcome note from corporate.

Everything technically perfect.

But Damon could still hear Victoria’s voice.

You don’t belong here.

He stood at the window for almost twenty minutes before calling his mother.

Sun-hee answered with:

“You sound tired.”

“Long day.”

“Did you eat?”

Damon laughed.

Some questions survive billions.
