“Please don’t play the part where I opened the drawer.”

Mitchell Granger whispered it so softly that for half a second nobody seemed certain they had heard him.

Then Detective Liam Cross turned.

Slowly.

Captain David Miller did too.

Judge Rosalind Hayes remained seated behind her desk.

Her expression did not change.

Philip Norton, the courthouse IT director, froze with both hands over the laptop keyboard.

The young internal affairs investigator near the door looked from Granger to the screen.

“What did you just say?” Captain Miller asked.

Granger blinked.

“I said—”

“No.”

Miller stepped closer.

“You said, ‘Don’t play the part where I opened the drawer.’”

Granger’s face lost color.

“I meant if there’s confidential material—”

Philip looked up.

“The video hasn’t started yet.”

Silence.

Granger looked at the laptop.

Then at Rosalind.

That was the mistake.

Not running.

Not confessing.

Looking at her.

Because in that one frightened glance, Rosalind saw confirmation.

He knew.

He knew exactly what the camera had captured.

She leaned back in her chair.

“Philip,” she said.

Her voice was calm.

“Play it.”

Granger moved toward the door.

Detective Cross stepped directly in front of him.

“Stay.”

“You can’t detain me.”

Cross glanced at the narcotics bag resting on the judge’s desk.

“We’re about to find out.”

Philip pressed the space bar.

The video began.

The footage was grainier than ordinary courthouse surveillance.

No audio.

Infrared at night.

A wide overhead angle hidden inside what looked like an ordinary smoke detector above the bookcase.

The timestamp appeared in the lower corner.

1:43:12 A.M.

Empty chambers.

Dark desk.

Rain beginning against the windows.

Nothing happened for almost a minute.

Then a narrow ribbon of light appeared beneath the hallway door.

The door opened.

A man entered.

Police uniform.

Cap pulled low.

No flashlight.

No hesitation.

He shut the door carefully behind himself.

Philip paused the video.

Nobody spoke.

The face was visible enough.

Mitchell Granger.

Rosalind looked toward him.

His eyes remained fixed on the floor.

Captain Miller asked:

“Were you assigned to the courthouse last night?”

Granger swallowed.

“I came by.”

“For what?”

“Security check.”

“At one forty-three in the morning?”

“We’ve had threats against judges.”

Rosalind said:

“Not against me.”

Granger looked at her.

“Not that you know.”

Captain Miller held up one hand.

“Let the footage run.”

Philip resumed.

On screen, Granger crossed directly to Rosalind’s desk.

Not the windows.

Not the panic alarm.

Not the hallway access panel.

The desk.

He removed one glove from his pocket.

Put it on.

Then opened the bottom right drawer.

Rosalind heard Detective Cross breathe out.

A long, disbelieving exhale.

On screen, Granger took something from inside his jacket.

A plastic evidence pouch.

Small.

Rectangular.

He placed it inside the drawer.

Closed it.

Then stood motionless for two seconds, staring at the desk.
