A third officer remained by the cruiser, a silent figure who watched but did not intervene. The younger officer's nameplate read FOWLER, and he holstered his pistol when Copeland ordered him to examine the sedan. "Check it," Copeland said. "Let's see what she's doing under that hood." Monica tried to explain that she would consent to verification of her ownership but not to an unrestricted search. Copeland told her that a suspect did not set the conditions of an investigation.

Fowler opened the driver's door. Monica watched from her knees, turning only her eyes as he leaned toward the cabin. His right hand moved to the cargo pocket on his thigh, and he paused for a fraction of a second with his body between her and the interior. Then the hand disappeared beneath the dashboard, beyond the angle from which she could see it. When he straightened, he was holding a black handgun high in the sunlight, his fingers arranged so the gathering neighbors could see exactly what he claimed to have found.

"Under the driver's seat, Sarge," Fowler announced. A woman on the next porch made a small frightened sound, and somebody farther up the street told a child to go inside. Copeland did not look surprised or even particularly interested in the weapon. He looked directly at Monica and said, "Well, would you look at that. A stolen-looking car and a handgun beneath the seat."

Monica studied the pistol rather than the man holding it. The weapon was angled toward the sunlight for only a moment, but the serial marking on the frame was visible before Fowler slipped it into a clear evidence bag. Her father's voice returned with startling clarity: read what's there, not what they tell you ought to be there. She focused on the letters, separated them from the digits, and stored the whole sequence in her mind. Then she turned her face toward Ralph's garage, where his phone was still recording.

"D-X-three-zero-four-one-seven," she called, slowly enough to be heard across the street. She repeated the complete serial number once more without looking away from the camera. "DX30417." Copeland laughed down at her and asked whether she was trying to memorize her own gun. Monica raised her eyes to his and answered, "I'm memorizing yours."

His smile stayed fixed for a heartbeat too long. Then he turned away and called dispatch, requesting a tow truck and a command officer, his tone suddenly more formal than it had been a moment earlier. Ralph lowered his phone by an inch and raised it again, conscious of the silence that had settled over the neighbors. Monica stayed on her knees with the cuffs pressing into her wrists and waited. She had already decided that she would not disclose her rank by shouting it into the street; if the officers ignored her identification, the problem would not be solved by making her job title another reason to argue.
