Evan came to the doorway and asked him to describe it before he said anything else. Daniel identified a small tear near the stitching, a photograph of his father behind the license, and three hundred twenty dollars in emergency cash that had never appeared on any receipt. Evan looked at the property record and felt a fresh coldness settle across his shoulders. The wallet was not listed; the cash was not listed; and Daniel's account now fit into a pattern far bigger than the truck alone.

"I want to make a statement," Daniel said. "Right now. Before somebody tells me again that they can't find anything."

Evan gave him a blank statement form and led him to an empty interview room. "Write everything you remember," he said. "Keep the dates separate from what you suspect, and tell me who was present. Don't guess anything just because you think that's what someone wants to hear."

Daniel took the form with both hands. For five months he had been spoken to as though his repeated visits were a personal inconvenience. This was the first time anyone in that department had asked him to create a record that might outlast the sheriff's decision to ignore him. He began writing slowly, checking each date against the folded receipts in his coat pocket.

Back in the evidence room, Evan looked at the photographs on his phone and then at the door. He knew the difference between helping a detained man make a call and dismantling a county institution, although the second task was beginning to grow from the first. He also understood that he had reached the moment when keeping his employment would require him to forget what he had just seen. He put the phone in his inner pocket and walked toward the intake room.

It was 2:47 in the afternoon when Deputy Evan Mercer carried the desk telephone into the intake room. Marcus had been sitting almost motionless, measuring the passage of time by sounds from the hallway and the changing pitch of the ventilation fan. When the door opened, he saw the phone first, then the deputy's face. Evan placed the instrument on the table and slid it within reach.

"Make your call, sir," he said.

Marcus looked at him for a moment. "Does the sheriff know you're allowing this?"

"No, sir."

"And you understand he may not approve?"

Evan gave a faint, exhausted smile. "I've begun to think approval and the right thing are not always the same thing in this building."

Marcus picked up the receiver. His hand ached, and the small motion of closing his fingers around it made him aware of how badly his wrist had swollen. He dialed the federal number he knew from years of working with the people responsible for protecting the judiciary, requesting the duty desk for the United States Marshals Service in the Middle District of Georgia. He was not calling to announce that local authority must bow before a more important man; he was reporting an ongoing detention and requesting a lawful response.

"United States Marshals Service. Duty desk," a man's voice answered.

"This is United States District Judge Marcus D. Whitmore, Middle District of Georgia. I'm in custody at the Oak Haven County Sheriff's Department on County Road Six. I was arrested after a noncriminal encounter at Bee's Diner and subjected to physical force. I need my identity verified and an immediate protective response coordinated with the appropriate authorities."

The voice on the line became attentive without becoming dramatic. The deputy marshal asked for identifying details, the judge's chambers number, the address of the facility, and whether there was an immediate threat. Marcus answered each question carefully and identified Harlon by name and badge number. The man on the phone told him to remain on the line while the information was verified through official channels.
