Buddy Is Still Waiting for Someone to Choose Him
Chapter 1
Buddy is still at our adoption center, and his days have developed a routine that everyone here has come to recognize.
Each morning, staff members arrive before visitors enter the building. Buddy hears the familiar sounds of kennel doors opening, food bowls being prepared, and cleaning carts moving through the hallway. He usually stays relaxed during those early hours because he knows the people around him.
He eats breakfast, goes outside for his morning walk, and spends some time sniffing around the exercise area.
Then the adoption center opens.
That is when Buddy starts watching the hallway.
He has learned that unfamiliar footsteps sometimes mean visitors.
If someone begins walking toward his kennel, Buddy's head comes up almost immediately. He moves toward the chain-link gate and watches carefully.
Then his tail starts wagging.
It is one of the things our volunteers notice most about him.
Despite spending so much time waiting, Buddy has not stopped becoming hopeful when someone approaches.
His tail sweeps back and forth several times as the visitor gets closer. If the person stops in front of his kennel, Buddy usually moves right up to the fence.
Then comes the paw.
Buddy lifts one front paw and gently scratches against the chain-link gate.
He will often do it once, pause, and then do it again.
His eyes remain fixed on the person standing outside.
We know better than to claim exactly what a dog is thinking, but the behavior has become difficult for our staff to watch without feeling something.
It looks like Buddy is asking people not to walk away.
He does not aggressively throw himself against the gate. He does not growl or become frantic. Most of the time, he does not even bark.
He simply wags his tail, reaches out with one paw, and waits to see what the person will do.
Unfortunately, many people continue walking.
When that happens, Buddy often remains at the front of the kennel for a little while.
He watches them visit another dog.
Then another.
Eventually, when the footsteps disappear, he lowers himself back onto his bed.
A few minutes later, he may fall asleep.
Then another visitor arrives, and Buddy gets up to try again.
Physically, Buddy is doing well.
His most recent veterinary examination did not reveal any major illness or injury. His heart and lungs sounded normal, his mobility was comfortable, and his weight remained within an appropriate range.
His appetite is also good.
Buddy rarely needs encouragement at mealtime, and he has learned exactly when the food cart usually reaches his section of the shelter. Staff members often find him waiting near his bowl before dinner arrives.
His medical needs at this point are routine. We continue monitoring his weight, skin, coat, dental health, and overall condition while making sure his vaccinations and preventive care remain current.
Our larger concern is keeping Buddy emotionally healthy while he continues waiting.
Even a well-managed shelter cannot replace a home.
Dogs hear barking throughout the day. Strangers constantly enter and leave. Kennels are cleaned. Volunteers change shifts. One dog may disappear because it has been adopted, while another unfamiliar dog arrives hours later.
Buddy has lived with that uncertainty for a long time.
Our staff works hard to make sure his entire life does not happen behind the chain-link gate.
He receives regular walks and individual time with volunteers. He also spends time in a quieter room away from the kennel hallway, where he can relax without watching potential adopters pass.
That is where people often see a very different side of him.
Outside the kennel, Buddy is calmer.
He likes to explore for a few minutes before settling near whoever is with him. He enjoys gentle attention and will sometimes lean his shoulder against a familiar volunteer's leg.
He also likes simply sitting beside someone.
There does not always need to be a toy or activity.
Sometimes Buddy seems happiest when a person stays.
That may be why watching people leave his kennel is so difficult.
He clearly enjoys human companionship.
One volunteer has developed a particularly close relationship with him. When she enters the hallway, Buddy recognizes her before she reaches his kennel.
The tail starts immediately.
But instead of scratching desperately at the gate, he waits because he has learned something important about her.
She always comes back for him.
She opens the kennel, attaches his leash, and takes him outside.
Those walks have become one of Buddy's favorite parts of the day.
He walks at a comfortable pace and spends much of his time investigating scents. Sometimes he stops and looks back at the volunteer holding his leash, almost as though checking that she is still there.
Then he continues.
Buddy has also started receiving more enrichment inside his kennel.
Food puzzles help occupy him during quiet periods. Soft toys give him something to carry back to his bed. Volunteers rotate activities so his days do not become completely repetitive.
Still, nothing gets his attention quite like footsteps in the adoption hallway.
Yesterday afternoon was a good example.
Buddy had been resting when a couple entered his section of the shelter.
His head came up.
He watched them approach.
Then he stood and walked toward the gate.
His tail began wagging.
The couple stopped.
Buddy moved closer.
