“Do you know why this matters?”

“Not exactly.”

“Because somebody reused an internal tracking code across different transactions. That connects the intimidation effort to the same group handling the money. We still have to authenticate it, but it's the kind of link we've been missing.”

Ethan watched her turn another page. She found the transcript of Vane's visit, then the customer's statement describing a threat involving a child's school. Doyle paused longer over the later pages, where the repeated dates and vehicles began to form a pattern. Her excitement remained contained, but her voice changed. “You didn't just keep a box,” she said. “You built a chronology.”

“I didn't know anybody would use it.”

“Most important evidence begins with somebody preserving what they were afraid might be denied.”

Jack looked toward Ethan with a mixture of pride and concern. He wanted to be glad the boy's habit had helped, but he also understood that a federal case could pull Ethan into dangerous and exhausting territory. Doyle seemed to read the worry on his face. She told them there would be interviews, attempts to verify the recordings, and perhaps subpoenas. She said clearly that she could not guarantee a particular outcome and that neither Ethan nor Jack should try to investigate Caldwell personally.

“The box is a copy,” Ethan said. “The originals are in a safe-deposit box in town. I also made digital backups.”

Doyle leaned forward. “You kept the source files?”

“Yes, ma'am. I can show you which ones are directly from my phone and which were supplied by other people.”

“Good. That's important.” She paused. “Will you consent to an evidence transfer of the relevant originals so we can document their chain of custody?”

Ethan looked at Jack. For years, adults had taken things from him while insisting that their authority made his feelings irrelevant. Even when people meant well, his first impulse was to grip what he had more tightly. Jack met his eyes and said, “It's your call. Nobody makes it for you.”

Ethan thought about his mother, his hidden school documents, and the years when his stepfather could tell any story he liked because nobody bothered to check. He turned back to Doyle. “I'll do it if I get a complete inventory and a receipt for what I hand over.”

Doyle smiled for the first time. “I was going to insist on that myself.”

The bank was closing soon, so Doyle called Martin Bell to ask whether a documented after-hours appointment could be arranged with the account holder's consent. Martin knew Jack and Padre, but he didn't agree to anything until he had spoken to his supervisor and confirmed the bank's procedure. He called back twenty minutes later and said he could meet Ethan and the agent at a limited-access side entrance. Padre offered to ride along, but Ethan asked him to remain with Jack and the garage. Jack looked surprised by the request and then nodded, understanding that the young man wanted him protected while he was gone.
