They took Sarah toward Kingman, the truck moving steadily with the motorcycles ahead and behind. Grim kept his speed conservative on the wet pavement and listened for any change in the pattern of traffic. Sarah asked twice whether Ethan had really eaten, and twice Marco told her he had. On the second answer she began to cry without sound. Marco kept both hands on the wheel and pretended not to notice, granting her privacy while making certain she remained awake and responsive.

Twelve miles from Kingman, Danny saw headlights appear behind them and remain there through three turns. The vehicle did not close the distance, but it did not fall back either. Grim noticed it when the headlights vanished at a junction and reappeared on a parallel road, and he felt the old warning tighten behind his eyes. He signaled for the truck to take the highway bypass rather than the direct route to the diner. The extra distance cost time, but it left them near a busier stretch with more witnesses and an open emergency clinic if Sarah's breathing worsened.

"Are we being followed?" Sarah asked from the truck. Marco kept his answer simple.

"We're making sure the road stays clear." He did not ask her to relax, knowing it would be an impossible request. Grim watched the highway ahead and thought about the other vehicle, the deputy, and Clay's reputation for always knowing where people had gone. One of those details, or perhaps all of them, would matter later.

When the diner sign finally rose out of the rain, Sarah pressed her hands flat against her knees. Marco parked behind the building and helped her down before anyone could come outside and draw attention. Millie opened the kitchen door before he knocked, took one look at Sarah's face, and reached immediately for the chair beside the prep counter. "Sit for a second, sweetheart," she said. "Your children are right through there."

Sarah refused the chair. She moved past Millie, across the short passage, and into the dining room with the desperate, uneven determination of someone following the only sound that could still matter. Ethan saw her first. He rose so suddenly the booth shuddered, and Rosie woke with a frightened cry that ended when she saw who stood beside the counter. Sarah held out her arms, and both children reached her before she took another step.

The sound of their reunion filled the diner more completely than any shout. Ethan buried his face against his mother's shoulder and cried the way he had not allowed himself to cry on the road. Rosie clung to Sarah's waist, repeating "Mama" as though she needed the word to prove the person was real. Sarah bent despite the pain in her ribs and held both children, making the kind of small, broken sounds no adult could have prepared a child to hear. Grim remained near the door, his wet jacket dripping onto the floor, and looked away to give them the little privacy the room allowed.
