She set the pie on the counter and touched the edge of the handwritten paper. He had left her original note at the bottom, Dinner together, no excuses. Her expression softened, and Nolan suddenly understood how much work had gone into making the sentence look casual when she wrote it. She turned and hugged him hard enough that he had to steady the box of rolls against his chest.

For a while they talked about ordinary things. She told him about a coworker who had adopted an elderly dog and discovered it could open kitchen cabinets, and he told her how the snow had started while he was leaving work. Tessa noticed the hesitation that followed the word work. She pulled out a chair and looked at him with the directness she had inherited from her mother.

"Dad, what's wrong?" Nolan put down the serving spoon. He wanted to say he had a small problem that would work itself out, but he remembered promising himself he would not lie to her. He told her about the revised holiday staffing email, the approval form, the meeting upstairs, and Blair ordering everyone to the dispatch floor.

Tessa listened without interrupting. When he described the firing, her eyes widened and then filled with tears she seemed determined not to let fall. "She fired you because you were coming home for Thanksgiving?" she asked. Nolan said the matter was more complicated at the company, but as far as his conduct went, the request had been approved and he had followed the process.

He told her about the coworkers who had resigned and about the offer he had received that morning. Tessa stared at him when he mentioned double pay. "You said no?" she asked, not accusing him, simply trying to understand the size of the decision. He explained that Blair had offered to buy his return without addressing anything that had driven the crew to leave.

"I'm scared," he admitted. "I don't know how long it'll take to find another job, and I don't want you to think I threw away something important because I was proud." Tessa reached for his hand. She waited until he looked at her before speaking.

"Dad, you've spent years making sure I had everything," she said. "The house, school, food, college, all of it. But there were nights when what I needed wasn't something you could earn. I just needed you to be home." Nolan stared down at the two plates and found that he could not answer immediately.

She reminded him of the history award, the missed school play, and the Thanksgiving spent with his sister. She was careful not to turn the memories into a verdict because she knew how hard he had tried. "I love you," she said. "I know you worked because you wanted to protect me. I just don't want us to keep losing evenings when we don't have to."
