No special spotlight.

No dramatic music.

No giant check.

Vivien handed him an envelope.

Their eyes met.

“I checked personally.”

Ethan smiled.

“I hope not.”

She looked surprised.

“Excuse me?”

“I hope you didn’t include me because you were afraid of Gideon.”

Several employees nearby laughed.

Vivien did too.

Then she shook her head.

“No.”

Her voice became quieter.

“You were included because your work was evaluated correctly.”

Ethan nodded.

“Better answer.”

He took the envelope.

Inside was the bonus he had earned under the new system.

No ridiculous hero payment.

No attempt to purchase forgiveness.

Fair recognition.

That mattered more to him.

After the meeting, Ethan returned to the basement.

His daughter was waiting near the security desk because they were going to dinner.

She had grown enough that he sometimes forgot how small she had been when her mother died.

She looked at the envelope in his hand.

“Bonus?”

“Apparently.”

“How much?”

“None of your business.”

“I’m your child.”

“That does not make you my accountant.”

She grinned.

“Can we get sushi?”

“That depends.”

“On what?”

“How much value you created this year.”

She stared.

“Dad.”

He laughed.

“Fine.”

They headed toward the elevators.

As they crossed the lobby, Gideon appeared near the entrance.

He was in town for a board session.

“Ethan.”

“Gideon.”

His daughter looked between them.

“This is the investor guy?”

Gideon smiled.

“I’ve been called worse.”

She shook his hand.

“My dad says you’re stubborn.”

Ethan closed his eyes.

Gideon looked delighted.

“Your father has excellent judgment.”

They walked together toward the doors.

Outside, evening light reflected off the glass towers.

Gideon asked:

“Do you ever regret staying?”

Ethan looked back at the Mercer Dynamics building.

A year earlier, he had walked through the same lobby after being publicly told that other people created more value.

He could have left.

Several firms had called after the Black Ridge story circulated internally through investment circles.

Gideon’s own offer remained open in spirit.

Staying had not been the obvious choice.

“No.”

Gideon looked at him.

“Why?”

Ethan took a moment.

His daughter waited beside him.

Finally he said:

“Because leaving would have been easier.”

Gideon raised an eyebrow.

“That usually sounds like a reason to leave.”

“Sometimes.”

Ethan looked through the glass toward employees still gathering upstairs.

“But this place changed.”

“People changed.”

“Processes changed.”

He shrugged.

“And I didn’t need a bigger title.”

“What did you need?”

Ethan thought about the bonus list.

Vivien.

Roland.

Black Ridge.

His daughter asking why people never noticed what he did.

Then he answered.
