Whitmore stepped toward the younger man. "You think you're better than me now?"

"No," Mills said. "I think this needs to stop."

Eleanor approached the gate holding a large bath towel. She stopped on the outside of the fence and looked to Simone for permission before entering. The simple courtesy almost undid Simone. After being questioned for so long about whether she belonged on her own property, having someone ask before crossing the boundary felt unexpectedly intimate.

"Come in," Simone said.

Eleanor wrapped the towel around her shoulders. "You're freezing, honey. Please come inside."

"I will. I just need to make sure these videos are saved."

"They are," Daniel called. "I've backed mine up already, and I'm asking everyone else to keep the originals."

Marcus shifted the bicycle aside and approached a step, still recording. "Dr. Laurent, I'm sorry. I didn't know what else to do."

"You did something important. But now I want you somewhere safe, away from the officers. Don't go chasing a better angle. The video isn't worth getting hurt."

He nodded. The live stream had passed twelve thousand viewers, and he seemed frightened by the speed with which his neighborhood had become a national event. His phone vibrated continuously with messages from classmates and strangers. For the first time, he looked less like a boy holding a camera and more like a boy trying to understand a responsibility he had not expected to carry.

Daniel came to the fence. "I'm Daniel Carter. We haven't properly met, but I live two houses down. I practiced civil rights law for thirty years. I'll give investigators a statement, and I'll help the neighbors understand how to preserve their recordings if they want."

"Thank you," Simone said. "Please encourage them not to edit anything, even the embarrassing parts. The whole sequence matters."

"It does," he agreed. "Especially what happened before the hose."

That point stayed with her. The attack had lasted less than a minute, but it grew out of the long conversation Whitmore had spent inventing reasons not to believe her. Without the earlier footage, he could claim he had been startled, threatened, or mistaken about the splash. With it, the water became the last act in a sequence of decisions that had begun with a Black woman working in her own garden.

Whitmore sat on the damp curb with his elbows on his knees. A moment earlier he had looked too proud to sit anywhere his uniform might get dirty. Now he watched the neighbors and the phones, moving his lips without making a sound. When Simone met his eyes, he rose abruptly.

"Your Honor, please. I've got a family. A wife and two kids. I can't lose everything over this."

She kept the towel around her shoulders. "I don't know your children. They had no part in what you did. But neither did I."

"I can apologize. I'll apologize publicly. I'll do training, whatever you want."
