He never said he had shredded anything. He never said the words sorry. Then he looked straight at Lennox. You could have stopped all of this with one sentence. You let it happen so you could watch.
If your deputy had treated me right only because of my title, that wouldn't prove this place works. It would prove a title was the only thing protecting me. You have no idea what it takes to keep a department like this one running. A department that can only survive by hiding its decisions has already failed, Captain. Justice is only fair when power has to obey it, too.
Puit looked down at his own hands for a long time. He did not argue. He did not agree. Soulberg ended the interview at 4:22.
As the sky outside began to turn gray, Lennox walked out to the secured lot behind the building where the Bentley had been towed. Rain had dried on the broken glass in little white rings. Through the empty window frame, he could see the photograph of his father still lying face down on the passenger seat. He couldn't reach in to get it. It was evidence now.
He took out his phone, which had been returned to him shortly after midnight, and called his son. Miles answered on the second ring, voice thick with sleep. I'm sorry I missed the game, son. I'll explain everything when I get home.
It's a long story. We lost, Dad, by four, but I had 11 assists. Lennox laughed for the first time in 14 hours. He stood there in the cold parking lot beside a broken car and laughed until his eyes were wet.
The press conference at 9 that morning lasted less than 10 minutes. Lennox stood at a small podium with the state flag behind him and told reporters only what the evidence already supported. There had been a traffic stop. He had been detained before his appointment took effect. An independent state investigation was underway. No one would be protected because of rank and no one would be punished without due process.
A reporter asked whether he believed he had been stopped because of his race. Lennox looked at the cameras for a long moment before he answered. That is one of the questions the evidence will answer, and it's one this county is going to have to sit with for a while.
Nothing moved fast after that. Real things rarely do. Wade Toiver was placed on leave that Monday and fired seven weeks later. The video made his report worthless and the deleted files made it worse. He was eventually charged with destroying evidence and filing a false report and he took a plea before trial.
Russell Puit's case took much longer. Investigators reopened decades of old complaints. Some turned out to be nothing, and a few deputies who had been accused unfairly years earlier were finally cleared. Others confirmed problems that should have been dealt with long ago. Puit was removed from command and later indicted for obstruction and evidence tampering. He never admitted a thing.
Complaint 91-0447 was too old to prosecute. The law had a clock on it, and the clock had run out years ago. What Wendell Prior got instead was a letter signed by the sheriff of Ridley County formally reopening his complaint and correcting the record. He read it at his kitchen table with Leah beside him.
