"Hello."

The voice on the other end was loud enough that he held the phone away for a moment.

"Yes, I saw the video."

He listened.

"No, it is not what it looks like."

A pause.

"I understand what I said."

Another pause.

His shoulders lowered.

"No, I did not know who he was."

That answer created a silence on the other end longer than anything before it.

Bradford closed his eyes.

"That's not what I meant."

He listened again.

"Yes. Seven a.m. Monday. I'll be there."

The call ended.

When he returned to the table, Victoria had opened the viral clip again.

"They're calling us racists."

Bradford sat down.

"We need to leave."

"No."

"Victoria."

"If we leave, it looks like we admit it."

"We already said it."

"We made a mistake."

"On twelve phones."

Her eyes filled.

"I didn't know it was him."

The sentence escaped before she could hear what was wrong with it.

Bradford heard it.

So did the woman at the next table.

She turned toward Victoria and said, "Would it have been all right if he wasn't?"

Victoria went still.

The woman did not wait for an answer.

She picked up her bag and moved away.

That question stayed between Bradford and Victoria after she left.

Would it have been all right if he wasn't?

The lights near the stage dimmed.

Ellen stepped to the microphone.

"Ladies and gentlemen, before our keynote, I want to thank every student, teacher, volunteer, and sponsor who made tonight possible."

The room settled.

Bradford gripped the edge of the table.

Victoria whispered, "Maybe he won't say anything."

Bradford looked at her.

"Would you?"

Ellen continued.

"Innovation for Tomorrow began with a simple belief: talent exists everywhere, even when opportunity does not. Our work is to make sure a child's zip code, family income, race, or background does not decide how far their curiosity can carry them."

Applause rose.

Ellen waited.

"Tonight's keynote sponsor understands that personally. His foundation has funded computer labs, teacher training, engineering scholarships, and summer programs in communities that investors and institutions too often overlook."

Victoria's breathing shortened.

Bradford stared at the stage.

"Please welcome the founder and chief executive officer of Horizon Capital Partners, whose $2.5 million commitment is underwriting the next three years of our STEM access program."

A pause.
