“I don’t believe for one second she’s capable of the kind of harassment being described in that complaint. I’ve watched her absorb far worse than what’s been described here and never once lash out. Not until somebody hurt a man who couldn’t easily defend himself. And even then, all she did was speak the truth plainly without raising her voice.” He looked directly at Dalton as he said his final words. “There’s a difference between strength and cruelty, son. I’ve spent my whole life learning to tell them apart. What I’ve watched in this room today makes it very clear which one you’ve been practicing.”

He returned to his seat, leaving the small tape sitting on the committee’s table. A piece of history nobody in that room had expected to walk through the door that morning. Dean Voss looked shaken, glancing between the tape, the video still open on Nolan’s phone, and the young woman sitting quietly with tears finally sliding down her face, though her posture remained perfectly straight.

“This committee will need time to review everything presented,” she said. “But given the severity of what has been described, particularly regarding Mr. Puit’s fall, I believe it’s appropriate to pause and hear directly from any additional witnesses present.” She glanced around the room. “Is there anyone else who wishes to speak?”

For a moment, nobody moved. Then from the back of the room, a voice, calm and warm, carrying the particular authority of someone long accustomed to speaking in front of quiet listening crowds. “If I may.” Every head turned. A tall man in his sixties stood near the door, silver-haired, dressed simply in a dark coat over a plain colored shirt. Beside him stood a woman, elegant and composed in her seventies, her posture unmistakably familiar to anyone who had spent time studying the way Josie carried herself.

“My name is Reverend Elias Whitfield,” the man said, walking forward slowly. “I’ve served as pastor of Milbrook Community Church for nearly thirty years. I baptized Daniel Callaway’s daughter myself, though she wouldn’t remember it. She was only a few months old at the time.” He paused, glancing gently at Josie, whose eyes had gone wide with surprise. “I’ve stayed in contact with this family over the years through some very difficult seasons. And I wanted to be here today to speak to the character of the young woman standing before you, and to introduce someone this town owes a great deal to, though most of them don’t even know it.”

He gestured to the woman beside him. “This is Eleanor Callaway,” he said. “Josephine’s grandmother.” Josie turned in her seat, stunned, staring at the woman she had not seen in nearly three years, not since her father’s funeral, when grief had made every conversation feel impossible. “Grandma,” she whispered.

Eleanor smiled softly at her granddaughter, though her attention remained focused on the committee. “I’ll keep this brief,” she said, her voice steady despite the emotion clearly beneath it. “Fifteen years ago, this town’s only diner, the Lantern, was on the verge of closing. Walter Higgins had fallen behind on taxes after a difficult year, health troubles, a bad harvest for the local suppliers he depended on. I purchased the note quietly through a small trust, and forgave the debt slowly over time, asking nothing in return, except that the diner remained a place where anyone in this town, regardless of what they had or didn’t have, could always find a warm meal and a little dignity.”

She paused, looking around the room. “I did that in honor of my son,” she said, “because he believed deeply that a community is only as strong as how it treats its most overlooked members. I never told anyone what I’d done, not even Walter, until just this past year when age finally convinced me some things are better said aloud before it’s too late to say them.”
