“I asked a factual question.”

Sandra sat back.

“Yes.”

“Both?”

“Yes.”

“Any white passengers with document problems this week?”

“I don’t remember.”

The investigator consulted notes.

“There were three. One had an expired passport. One presented a boarding pass under a married name while the ID carried a maiden name. One attempted to travel with a damaged driver’s license.”

Sandra said nothing.

“All three were referred for verification without public accusation. None were described as fraudulent over the gate microphone.”

Sandra’s face hardened.

“Those were different.”

“How?”

She could not explain it without exposing the assumptions beneath the distinction. David Walsh’s interview was worse. He admitted he had no training in passport security features beyond general travel-document awareness. He had declared the watermark “wrong” because Sandra said the document looked fake and because he did not want to appear uncertain in front of the crowd.

“Did you know she had torn it before calling you?”

“No.”

“When you learned that, why didn’t you immediately stop the interaction?”

David rubbed his face.

“I thought if I contradicted her publicly, it would undermine security confidence.”

The investigator stared at him.

“So you reinforced an unsupported accusation because you were afraid of looking uncertain.”

David said nothing.

“Do you understand that this is exactly how preventable escalation occurs?”

“Yes.”

That answer came quietly. Janet Rodriguez’s interview provided a different view. She admitted she had been uncomfortable almost from the beginning.

“Why didn’t you intervene?”

“Sandra is senior to me.”

“Not formally.”

“No, but she has more years and David trusts her.”

“So you deferred.”

“Yes.”

“Even after she tore the passport?”

Janet looked down.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“I didn’t want to become the person who caused a scene.”

The investigator paused.
