For a moment nobody moved. The room was full of breathing, the distant noise of traffic, and the faint click of Olivia's recording. Derek looked from Tank to Leon to the elderly man standing between the counter and the door. His face changed as he recognized something in Marcus that had never appeared when they argued across paperwork.
"You assaulted them," Derek said, finding his voice again. "Everybody here saw it."
Mrs. Henderson rose with difficulty. "Everybody here saw what your man did first."
"You keep out of this, lady."
"I've been keeping out of it for weeks," she replied. "Look where that got us."
Olivia spoke from her grandmother's side. "It's all on video. He told them to stop. Your friend grabbed him."
Derek glanced at her phone and then toward the new camera above the register. Marcus saw the calculation take place. Derek had expected an isolated elderly man and no independent account of what happened. Instead he was standing among witnesses with two injured associates and a digital record he did not control.
"I am calling an ambulance," Marcus said. "You are welcome to wait outside, but nobody here is going to hurt anyone else."
Tank tried to stand and sat down again, embarrassed by how unsteady he felt. Marcus opened his first aid box, retrieved a cold pack, and set it within his reach without forcing him to accept it. Leon pressed a towel to his nose and glared with a confusion that looked almost like shame. Derek moved toward the door, ordering the others to follow.
"This isn't over," he said. "You'll regret touching my people."
"Tell the police exactly what happened," Marcus answered. "I'm going to do the same."
Derek left before the ambulance arrived. Mrs. Henderson, still standing, gave Marcus a long look that held affection and exasperation in equal measure. "I knew you hadn't forgotten everything," she said.
"I wish I could have," Marcus replied.
The paramedics examined Tank and Leon, both of whom accepted transport for further evaluation. Police officers took statements and asked for the diner's recording. Marcus provided it, along with the footage Olivia had made and the incident numbers from Derek's previous visits. The officers seemed attentive, but Marcus had dealt with enough institutions lately to know that a good initial interview was not the end of a case.
Olivia uploaded a short video later that morning, after sending an unedited copy to Marcus and Alicia. Her caption was simple: THIS IS WHAT HAPPENED AT MY GRANDMOTHER'S DINER. The clip began before Tank grabbed Marcus and continued through the point when Marcus offered an injured man an ice pack. Her classmates shared it, then their parents, then people who had never heard of Soul Food Sanctuary.
