He Tried to Leave His Ex-Wife With $50,000 — Then Her Lawyer Mentioned a $45 Million Debt
Chapter 4
"We are aware," Thomas said, his voice ringing with finality. "Which is why, pursuant to the signed collateral agreement, Obsidian Horizon Capital is executing a hostile takeover of the equity. We are seizing the 80% controlling stake in Harrington Estates, the commercial properties under its umbrella, and all associated operational accounts. Furthermore, because Mr. Harrington signed a personal guarantee on the loan—"
Arthur Penhaligon closed his eyes. He knew what was coming. It was the financial death blow.
"Obsidian Horizon Capital will be placing a lien on his personal assets to cover the remaining deficit," Thomas finished. "Including the Bel Air estate, his luxury vehicle collection, and his personal brokerage accounts."
"This is insane!" Richard suddenly screamed, leaping to his feet, his chair crashing backward onto the floor. "You set me up. You planned this from the beginning, you cold, calculating—"
"Bailiff!" Judge Rostova barked. The bailiff stepped forward immediately, placing a firm hand on Richard's shoulder and forcing him back. Richard was trembling, his chest heaving, his immaculate Brioni suit now looking like a straitjacket.
Claire watched his meltdown with a look of profound pity, which somehow cut deeper than anger ever could.
"I didn't set you up, Richard," Claire said, speaking to him directly for the first time in months. The courtroom fell silent, hanging on every word of the unassuming woman in the beige coat. "When we married, I believed in your vision. I used my resources to quietly prop up your early projects. When you over-leveraged the company three years ago and every bank in Los Angeles laughed you out of their offices, I stepped in."
"I created Obsidian Horizon through my wealth managers at Goldman Sachs to give you the lifeline you needed because your fragile ego never would have accepted a bailout from your own wife." Richard stared at her, his mouth opening and closing soundlessly, the reality of his own hubris finally crashing down on him.
"I managed your risk for a decade," Claire continued, her voice steady and relentless. "Whenever you made a reckless play, I was the safety net you never knew you had. But then you met Chloe. You decided you were a self-made titan of industry who no longer needed his boring wife. You demanded a divorce. You demanded I leave with nothing."
"So I simply stopped protecting you from yourself. You dug this grave with your own arrogance, Richard. I just stopped taking the shovel out of your hands."
"You... you're a monster," Richard choked out, tears of sheer panic welling in his eyes.
"No," Claire said softly. "I'm a billionaire, and I'm collecting my debts."
Judge Rostova let out a long, heavy sigh, looking at the documents before her. She had presided over family court for twenty years and had never witnessed a legal dismantling quite this elegant or brutal. She picked up a pen.
"Mr. Penhaligon," the judge said, looking at the defeated bulldog of an attorney, "do you have any legal basis to contest the commercial loan default or the execution of the collateral clause?"
Arthur looked at Richard, then back at the judge. He slowly shook his head. "No, Your Honor. The commercial contracts are outside the purview of this family court, and my client's transfer of assets constitutes a clear breach. We have no defense against the repossession."
"Very well," Judge Rostova said. She pulled the divorce decree toward her. "Then let us conclude the matter we are actually here for. Case number CV-88492. The prenuptial agreement is upheld as valid and binding.
Ms. Belmont waives all claims to marital support. In accordance with the contract, Mr. Harrington is ordered to pay Ms. Belmont a one-time sum of $50,000."
The irony of the $50,000 hung in the air, a pathetic drop in the bucket compared to the hundreds of millions in assets Claire had just legally stripped from him.
"We accept the $50,000, Your Honor," Thomas Wright said with a polite nod. "We will put it toward Ms. Belmont's legal fees."
"Decree signed," Judge Rostova announced, striking her gavel with a resounding crack that seemed to echo Richard's shattering reality. "We are adjourned."
As the judge swept out of the room, chaos erupted at the petitioner's table. "Richard!" Chloe shrieked, grabbing her Hermès Birkin bag from the gallery bench. "Are you telling me everything is gone? The company, the house, the money?"
"Chloe, please," Richard begged, reaching out to her. "I can fix this. I can start over. We can—"
"There is no 'we' if you're bankrupt," Chloe snapped, recoiling from his touch. "I am not spending the best years of my life living in a condo in Encino while you fight your ex-wife in bankruptcy court."
Without another word, the woman in the violent pink suit turned on her heel and stormed out of the courtroom. The sharp click-clack of her stilettos sounded like a ticking clock counting down the final seconds of Richard's privileged life.
Arthur Penhaligon didn't even look at his client. He quietly packed his expensive leather briefcase, snapped it shut, and walked out, already calculating how quickly he could drop Richard as a client before the legal bills bounced.
Richard sat entirely alone at his table, a king without a kingdom, surrounded by the ruins of his own making.
Across the aisle, Claire Belmont stood up. She smoothed the front of her understated trench coat, picked up her simple leather portfolio, and turned to Thomas.
"Excellent work today, Thomas," she said warmly.
"A pleasure as always, Claire." The older lawyer smiled. "What's next on the agenda?"
"I have a meeting with the board of directors at Harrington Estates at 2:00," Claire said, her voice echoing slightly in the now-empty room, save for the broken man at the other table. "I need to fire the CEO."
Without looking back at the man who had tried to leave her with nothing, Claire Belmont walked out of the courtroom, stepping confidently into the bright California sun, ready to rebuild an empire in her own name.
