He switched on the hangar’s exterior camera system, a habit he had adopted months earlier after repeated incidents of HOA staff wandering onto his property uninvited to plant flags, string tape, or simply take photographs for reasons he never fully understood. Around four o’clock, Vanessa noticed the hangar doors opening and came striding across the lawn holding a single printed page titled Emergency HOA Safety Order, declaring the runway closed effective immediately for the remainder of the event.

Mason asked which authority had issued it, and when she answered that the Silver Crest Board had, he reminded her without raising his voice that the Silver Crest Board was not the county, was not the Federal Aviation Administration, and did not own a single foot of the runway currently beneath her heels. He climbed into the cockpit, ran his checklist without hurrying, and started the engine while Vanessa stood watching the propeller spin faster and faster in the afternoon light.

Something in her expression shifted from irritation to something colder, something that looked almost like a decision being finalized. And instead of stepping back the way any reasonable bystander would, she turned and walked directly toward the parked utility truck, climbing into the driver’s seat with a speed that suggested she had already worked out exactly what came next.

Mason began taxiing slowly out of the hangar, glancing toward the truck sitting roughly one hundred yards off, assuming for a few seconds that Vanessa intended nothing more than another round of shouting alongside the moving aircraft, a tactic that would have been reckless enough on its own. Then the truck began to move, and instead of running parallel, the way an angry bystander might, it turned sharply toward the taxiway itself, angling directly into his path with a purpose that left no room for misreading.

He eased off the throttle immediately, expecting her to stop or swerve away at the last moment, but the truck kept accelerating, and through the windshield he could see with total clarity that she was the one behind the wheel. He hit the brakes hard, but the distance had already collapsed to almost nothing, and the truck cut diagonally across the nose of the aircraft before slamming into the left wing near the landing gear with a force that shook the entire airframe.

The sound of metal folding against metal carried across the entire property, loud enough that catering staff two hundred yards away turned to look, some of them dropping trays they had been carrying toward the tents. The plane rocked violently on its gear, and Mason shut the engine down immediately, watching fuel begin to weep from a seam in the damaged wing, while his hands moved through the emergency procedure out of pure instinct.
