Looked more closely.

Then did the same.

Both saluted.

“Chief Halloran, sir.”

Hadley’s face changed.

It began with confusion.

Then disbelief.

Then calculation.

She looked toward Brennan.

Then Murchison.

Then me.

Then Bryson.

As if somebody in that four-point circuit had to provide an alternate reality.

I returned the salute.

“Stand at ease.”

“Yes, sir.”

“Sergeant Brennan, this vehicle belongs to me. The complainant is Mrs. Hadley Lockwood across the street. She has produced documents investigators believe are forged. This incident is connected to an active investigation being handled by Major Crimes and the Forsyth County District Attorney’s Office.”

Brennan’s eyes widened slightly.

I continued.

“You will treat me as a witness and property owner, not as your commanding officer for purposes of fact-finding. Detective Bramwell is the lead investigator.”

“Yes, sir.”

“Do not ask Mrs. Lockwood substantive questions. Preserve what she already has in her possession. Ask her and her son to remain where they are until Detective Bramwell arrives.”

“Understood.”

Hadley shouted from across the road:

“This is ridiculous.”

Murchison approached her.

“Ma’am, please remain where you are.”

“He sold my son the car.”

“Ma’am, I need you to remain here.”

“He’s abusing his position.”

“Mrs. Lockwood, Detective Bramwell will speak with you.”

“There is no Detective Bramwell.”

From behind them came another voice.

“There is today.”

Holt Bramwell had arrived in an unmarked Dodge Charger.

He walked across the cul-de-sac carrying paperwork.

Badge visible.

Hadley stared at him.

Holt did not rush.

Good investigators rarely rush at the end of a long case.

“Hadley Marie Lockwood?”

She lifted her chin.

“Yes.”

“I’m Detective Holt Bramwell, Cederville Police Major Crimes.”

“This man is your chief.”

“I’m aware.”

“So this is obviously compromised.”

“No, ma’am.”

He held up the warrant.

“Chief Halloran was removed from investigative decision-making in this case days ago.”

Hadley looked toward me.

For the first time, there was something like fear in her expression.

Holt continued.

“We have a sworn witness statement concerning the document in your hand.”

Her fingers tightened.

“We have records concerning the notary information used on prior vehicle documents.”

Bryson sat down on the curb.

Holt looked at Hadley.

“We also have judicially authorized search warrants relating to Briarwood Glen HOA records, Briarwood Glen Community Development LLC, and associated electronic devices.”

Hadley’s face went white.

Three Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office vehicles entered the street.

Not fast.

No sirens.

They did not need theater.

Hadley turned toward her house.

Murchison moved subtly into position.

“Ma’am, stay where you are.”

Hadley’s breathing changed.

“This is because I filed HOA violations against him.”

“No,” Bramwell said.

“This is because evidence indicates you submitted documents you knew were false, filed a police complaint based on those documents, and participated in a larger scheme involving HOA financial pressure and property acquisition.”

She looked at Bryson.

Bryson stared at the pavement.

Bramwell read the arrest warrant.

When he finished, Hadley said:

“This is insane.”

He placed her in handcuffs.

Not roughly.

Not triumphantly.

Professionally.

At almost the same time, Sheriff Thrasher’s team entered the Lockwood residence under judicial authorization.
