"There's enough here for financial investigators to start preserving the records," Tessa said. "Not enough yet to freeze every account without process. I'm requesting the appropriate legal authority, and I'll identify any scheduled transfers that could disappear before a judge can review them."
Brennan ordered the first response units to approach in a way that reduced the risk of a confrontation, not in a display meant to punish anyone. Sheriff Grant Mercer was contacted separately and told that the county had received a false representation of civil authority. Grant read the court verification, immediately agreed to provide local officers for traffic and safety control, and ordered dispatch to correct the incident classification.
"We've treated this as a boundary dispute because that is what Maddox's office told us," he said. His words were clipped with frustration. "If there are armed men breaking into a residence, my deputies should already be there. Send me the authentication. I'm coming myself."
One deputy later recalled that the sheriff's office had received a call the night before from Corinne Maddox. She said a court-approved seizure would take place the following morning and asked dispatch to avoid interrupting a sensitive civil matter. No court document had been verified during that call. The note had nevertheless influenced the first emergency response and almost allowed an armed trespass to pass as routine paperwork.
Laurel looked at the map of her farm on the wall. The feeds showed the west access road partially blocked by damp soil and towing equipment. Several people stood beside the farmhouse, and a guard was carrying items from the kitchen to an association SUV. The situation was still moving, changing faster than the ordinary paperwork that had given Marjorie six months of advantage.
"They are trying to complete the physical transfer before anyone can challenge the paper," Laurel said. "The road is the real target. Keep the response focused on preventing injury and further destruction. If they scatter, we don't want armed contractors racing through school roads."
Brennan approved the aviation support already available nearby and assigned a supervisory captain to coordinate the ground units. Laurel was directed to accompany the field command group as the incident-stabilization lead, with Brennan retaining command authority and Tessa running the independent investigation. Laurel acknowledged the assignment on the recorded channel. The message that went to the responding officers described armed trespass at an occupied farm and a suspected forged judicial order, not a family dispute involving their commander.
Back at Red Hollow, Everett saw Marjorie stop the barn crew and point toward the north field. A large machine was rolling down the trailer ramp, its operator looking uncertain as guards waved him forward. The northern stone wall had been built by Everett's uncle after the winter storm of 1978, when a line of fallen trees washed into the pond and ruined the original fence. Everett knew the wall stone by stone because he had helped repair it through two different floods.
He keyed the barn's outside speaker. "There are active irrigation mains under that field," he announced. "There is also buried service infrastructure. You are going to hurt someone if you excavate without a utility survey. Stop that machine and wait for the county."
