"No," Odessa replied. "You made these decisions on Tuesday. You made them again last night. Today you are being asked to account for them."

For a moment it seemed he might argue further. He looked toward the employees he had ordered to stand in a line, toward Brett and Paige, and toward Marcus in his pressed suit. He searched for one face willing to tell him that the situation was unfair. He found none.

Then Odessa turned to Marcus. Her expression softened, but she did not attempt to turn the room's silence into a burst of applause. She asked him to come to the front desk, and he walked toward her feeling strangely unsteady. A part of him remained convinced this was an elaborate misunderstanding, that at any moment he would wake up in his apartment with the dismissal letter open on the kitchen table.

"You left these on my desk Tuesday night," Paige said.

She opened a drawer and brought out the white gloves, the ones with Ruth's careful black stitching along the finger. She held them toward him. Marcus looked at them for several seconds before taking them, and he felt a painful tenderness for the part of himself that had believed he would never wear them again.

"I thought I'd never see these," he said.

Odessa regarded the gloves. "You won't need to wear them as a doorman any longer."

He looked up. "Ma'am?"

"I've spent two days asking what you know about running a hotel and checking what others know about your work. Your attendance and records at the college are strong, your service record is excellent, and you understand more about the people in this building than most executives I've interviewed. That doesn't make you ready to run every part of a twelve-story hotel without support, but I believe you are ready to lead with the right team beside you."

Marcus felt the eyes of the entire staff on him. He wanted to step backward, not because he did not want the opportunity, but because he had always imagined this moment occurring years later, after the final semester and several promotions. He had never pictured it arriving in the same lobby where he had been told to remove his gloves.

"I want you appointed acting general manager of the Wexley," Odessa said. "Effective today, with Evelyn Price overseeing the operational transition and the executive team providing formal support. The board has authorized that arrangement, subject to the usual review and training requirements. If you do the work and the results support it, we will make the appointment permanent."

Marcus stared at her. "Me? I hold the door."

"Exactly," Odessa said. "And you know why it must be held. Now you'll learn how to make sure everybody inside this hotel understands it too."

His throat tightened. "I don't know everything a manager needs to know."

"Good. The people who think they know everything are usually the ones who stop listening."
