I also wrote something harder: I had been waiting for Sarah to become the woman she was when we first met, but the relationship I had was with the woman she had become. I could remember the early days without using them to excuse the later ones. The statement was not especially poetic, but it was true, and truth was beginning to feel more useful than hope built on incomplete evidence.

Sarah posted a video a few days later. I did not watch it when it first appeared; an acquaintance sent me the link with a short message asking whether I had seen it. I replied that I had not, and she sent a summary anyway. Sarah was crying on camera and saying she never expected to be abandoned by the person who claimed to love her most.

I eventually watched a short portion because I wanted to know whether she had named me or disclosed the address of my new apartment. She had not, but the story she told was familiar. She spoke about being left when she was vulnerable and about how painful it was when somebody walked away at the moment you needed them. She did not explain what happened the evening I left or the months leading up to it.

The comments were initially full of sympathy. People told her she deserved someone who would stay through hard times, and strangers wrote encouraging things about new beginnings. Then a commenter who apparently knew us asked whether she had told her boyfriend she was leaving to meet another man. The tone changed as other people added details, some accurate and others distorted beyond recognition.

I had no interest in enjoying a pile-on. Watching strangers speculate about four years of my life made me feel exposed rather than defended. I saved the link in case it became necessary to correct a specific allegation, then closed the app. By the next morning Sarah had removed the video, but screenshots and clipped copies were circulating anyway.

I learned afterward that she blamed Mia for some of the comments. She blamed Jess for not defending her publicly, Carol for refusing to help with money, and Derek for allowing her to believe there was a future between them. It was possible to understand why she was desperate without accepting that everyone else had caused her situation. I had spent years being the person expected to explain away those contradictions, and I could not keep doing it from the other side of a breakup.

My work promotion became official around then. It was not an enormous leap, just a new title, a small raise, and responsibility for a team whose deadlines had been slipping. Still, the letter meant something to me because it required a decision I had once avoided: I had to be willing to take up space and ask other people to trust my judgment. When my supervisor congratulated me, I thanked him without immediately explaining why someone else deserved it more.
