Charlie and Mabel have a bedtime routine that the shelter staff rarely see change.

Charlie is a 13-year-old Labrador mix.

Mabel is a 12-year-old Shepherd mix.

Both dogs are seniors.

Charlie is especially quiet.

His hearing has weakened with age, so he doesn't always notice when someone approaches.

Mabel, on the other hand, notices almost everything.

A door opening.

Footsteps in the hallway.

A leash being picked up.

And especially Charlie.

During the day, they spend much of their time together.

Charlie likes resting near the front of the kennel.

Mabel usually chooses a spot where she can see him.

If Charlie gets up, Mabel notices.

If he walks outside, she follows.

If he stops, she waits.

It isn't something the shelter staff taught her.

It just seems to be how she behaves around him.

One morning, a volunteer approached Charlie from behind.

Charlie didn't notice.

Mabel immediately walked over.

She gently touched her nose against his shoulder.

Charlie turned around.

He saw Mabel.

His tail moved softly.

Then he continued walking.

The volunteer watched the interaction.

It was almost like Mabel had found her own way of telling Charlie that someone was behind him.

Their walks are usually slow.

Charlie likes stopping to sniff.

Mabel gives him time.

Sometimes she explores a few feet ahead.

Then she turns around.

Charlie is always somewhere behind her.

She waits.

He catches up.

Then they continue.

Neither seems bothered by the slower pace.

They simply move together.

Their friendship becomes even more noticeable in the evening.

After dinner, Charlie usually goes straight to his bed.

Mabel takes a little longer.

She may walk around the kennel.

She may drink some water.

She may check the hallway.

But before she settles down, she always looks for Charlie.

One evening, Charlie had already fallen asleep.

Mabel walked over.

She sniffed his face gently.

Charlie didn't wake.

Mabel stood there for a few seconds.

Then she slowly curled up beside him.

Her head rested against his back.

She closed her eyes.

A staff member quietly called her name.

Mabel looked up.

Then she looked back at Charlie.

She stayed.

There was nothing dramatic about the moment.

It was simply an old dog choosing to stay beside another old dog.

The shelter staff have noticed the same thing during stressful moments.

When the shelter becomes noisy, Charlie can become confused.

Mabel usually moves closer.

She doesn't bark.

She doesn't try to pull him anywhere.

She simply stays within reach.

Charlie seems to relax when she does.

And when Mabel becomes restless, Charlie's presence seems to calm her too.

They have become familiar to each other.

A familiar face.

A familiar smell.

A familiar presence at the end of a long day.

Both dogs are seniors.

Charlie is 13.
