"Your check, sir."Leon looked at the screen Darren held out. The lemon fish was listed at sixty-eight dollars. Water had been entered as a complimentary item, but the subtotal was nearly twice what the menu promised."I thought the fish was thirty-four."Darren gave a small, patient smile. "There is a special preparation charge today. It's a discretionary adjustment based on the kitchen's workload.""The menu doesn't mention a preparation charge.""The menu doesn't list every operational detail, sir."Leon set down his fork. "Then I'd like to understand the charge before I pay it."Darren's smile thinned. "I'll have your server explain it."He turned away and signaled Roz with two fingers. She came over, glanced at the terminal, and went very still."This isn't right," she said.Darren lowered his voice, though not enough to keep Leon from hearing. "Roz. Table twenty-two. I keyed an override. Double price.""Double? He ordered one fish and tap water.""He won't check. Men like that never do."Roz looked at him. "Men like what, Darren?""Men who don't belong on this floor."Her face changed. The uncertainty disappeared, replaced by a steady anger that seemed to make her taller."That's stealing.""That's policy," Darren said. "Mine. Print it."Roz held his gaze. "It's not policy if you make it up to suit yourself."Darren's voice hardened. "Don't make waves over a few dollars.""It's thirty-four dollars.""And if you want to keep working here, you'll do what your manager tells you."Roz looked toward the kitchen. Benny had heard every word. He was holding a clean plate in both hands, watching without moving. Darren followed her gaze."Benny, get back to plating."Benny turned to the pass. "Yes, sir."He had a child, rent due on Friday, and no savings large enough to survive a lost paycheck. His silence was not approval. It was fear, and he knew it. He would remember that distinction later, when it was no longer comfortable to hide behind it.Roz took the terminal from Darren. "I'll print the check.""The adjusted check," Darren corrected."I'll print the check."She returned to the service station. Leon could see her shoulders rise and fall once as she took a careful breath. Then she printed two versions. One showed the $68 override. The other showed the menu price of $34. She placed both on a small tray and carried them to the table."I'm sorry, sir," she said. "The correct menu price is thirty-four dollars. The other amount was entered through a manager override that doesn't appear on the menu. You should not be asked to pay it."Leon looked at the two checks. "Two checks?""No," Roz said quietly. "One is the amount the system was told to charge. The other is the amount you actually owe. Please pay the one under the glass."She slid the correct check beneath the clear bill holder and left the inflated one beside it, where it could not be mistaken for a legitimate charge.Darren stood several feet away, his face darkening. "Roz, back hallway. Now."She did not move immediately. Leon looked from the two checks to her face."You know what this could cost you?" he asked."Yes," she said. "Less than it would cost me to pretend I didn't see it."
