He went home, set his phone on the nightstand, and slept well. He imagined Monday as a ceremony confirming a victory he had already won. He did not imagine that the woman he had called a chair warmer would walk onto the stage before his name was announced. He had been warned in small ways all week, but he had never considered that the warnings applied to him.

Monday began before sunrise in the offices of Sterling Vane. Cleaning crews moved through the corridors, an events team tested microphones in the main auditorium, and department managers checked their calendars for the all-hands announcement scheduled at ten. Posters with the words A NEW ERA stood beside the elevator banks. One included a photograph of Preston Hale that someone had enlarged so much it appeared to be watching the people walking past.

At seven-forty, Celia Moreno arrived with two members of her audit team and was met by Sterling Vane's outside counsel. Their access had been authorized under the acquisition documents and confirmed by the board chair. They requested preservation of the remaining Hale Strategy files, restricted further changes to the payment approval records, and notified the appropriate administrators that certain documents were subject to a formal hold. Nothing about the process resembled the dramatic entrance Preston would later imagine; most of the work occurred quietly in rooms he seldom visited.

Garrett arrived at eight-ten carrying a thin folder. Celia asked him to identify the original approvers on the consulting account, describe the process by which services were verified, and explain why the same executive appeared to control both the request and approval of the work. He answered carefully, sometimes stopping to correct himself. When he admitted that he had approved payments without seeing adequate evidence of completed services, Celia did not praise his honesty or excuse his failure.

"What matters now is that your account is complete," she told him. "We're going to compare what you say with the records. If they differ, we'll ask you why. And the company will have to decide what responsibility you bear for the decisions you made."

Garrett nodded. The answer was not comforting, but he trusted it more than a promise that cooperation would erase his signatures. He handed over the emails and the preserved approval history, including the messages in which Preston directed him to push the final batch through before Monday. The auditors logged receipt and added the folder to the evidence record.

At eight-thirty, Helena Marsh met with the board's audit committee in a conference room away from the auditorium. Celia presented only her supported preliminary findings: eighteen months of related-party consulting invoices totaling approximately $1.8 million, inadequate documentation for portions of the claimed work, and approval controls that had failed to provide independent verification. She also explained that Garrett's emails raised questions about whether he had been pressured to bypass established controls. The committee authorized a formal investigation, continued the payment hold, and approved temporary restrictions on Preston's financial system access.

The nomination committee met immediately afterward. Its members had been prepared to announce Preston as the future chief executive, subject to the owner's ratification, but the evidence no longer supported that recommendation. Helena asked each director whether the company should elevate someone facing unresolved conflict-of-interest and leadership-conduct concerns. One director argued that postponement would embarrass Sterling Vane after the rooftop celebration; another asked whether embarrassment was a legitimate reason to make an executive appointment.
