At that moment, an elevator opened behind the service corridor, and Malcolm Hayes stepped onto the sales floor with a regional operations manager and a tablet full of customer reports. He had arrived without his usual advance announcement, using a side entrance that employees reserved for management visits. He had intended to watch the floor quietly, speak with the service team, and compare what he saw with the complaints that had been accumulating in his office. Instead, he heard raised voices before he reached the main display area.

"What's going on?" Malcolm asked, stepping into the open aisle. Derek glanced toward him, immediately straightening his posture.

"Mr. Hayes, good morning. We have a small misunderstanding with a visitor, but it's being handled." Malcolm looked past him, saw the familiar yellow bus through the front windows, and then saw the woman standing beside Anna.

For a second, he did not speak. The work jacket was different from the one Gloria had worn at dinner, and her expression was one he had not seen since childhood, when a contractor had tried to charge her twice for an engine repair. Malcolm looked from his mother to Derek, then back again. "Mom?" he said.

The single word changed the air in the showroom. Derek's face emptied of color, and Kelsey's folded arms came apart as if they had been pulled loose. Anna looked at Malcolm, then at Gloria, not quite understanding the relationship yet. Gloria gave her son a small nod. "Hello, Malcolm. I came about the vans."

Malcolm took another step forward. "Why are you standing here in the middle of a shouting match?" Gloria answered in the same voice she used to tell a dispatcher that a route needed a second driver. "Because I have an appointment with Anna, and these two have told me I am not welcome. Derek is threatening to tow my bus out of your visitor parking lot." Malcolm looked toward the windows again, verifying the space for himself.

"Derek," he said, "I want an explanation. Why is my mother being told to leave?" Derek opened his mouth, closed it, and glanced toward Kelsey. "Sir, if someone had told me who she was—" Malcolm lifted one hand. "That isn't what I asked. I asked why a customer with a scheduled appointment is being threatened."

"I was trying to protect the showroom," Derek said. "We can't have people coming in and wasting sales time with purchases they clearly can't afford. I didn't realize she was your mother." Malcolm felt the words strike with a peculiar familiarity. His mother had warned him about exactly this possibility at her desk two nights earlier, and now it was happening three steps in front of him.

"She came here as a customer?" Malcolm asked Gloria. "Has this happened before today?" Gloria nodded. "This is the second visit.
