"I would like to be examined," Willa answered. "But I am not leaving before I explain what happened."

"That's fine, ma'am. Tell me what happened."

Derek tried to interrupt from several steps away. Morales raised one hand to stop him. Bell listened while Willa described asking to see the sapphire pendant, being redirected toward clearance merchandise, and then being accused of theft without evidence. She did not embellish. She named the bag, the broken strap, the birthday card, the slap, and the wheelchair being kicked. Each time her voice threatened to become strained from fatigue, Nadine waited until she had finished rather than taking over.

Bell asked whether Willa consented to an additional search of her bag. She shook her head. "No, officer. There is nothing in that bag that belongs to this store, and I do not consent to another person emptying it."

He did not press the question. A refusal alone was not evidence of wrongdoing, and there was no reported missing item or objective basis presented to support the theft claim. Morales moved toward the counter to inspect the area and speak to Leah, who knew the merchandise had been accounted for. Bell asked Nadine to describe what she had seen from the moment they entered.

When Nadine reached the part about being shoved, her voice broke. She touched the side of her hip and admitted it hurt. Morales offered to request medical assistance for her as well. Nadine said she would be examined after Willa was safe, then took a breath and continued. She gave the officers the precise sequence: Derek's demand, her refusal to move away, the shove, the slap, the kick, and Curtis stepping forward.

Derek's irritation became visible as the questions moved away from his prepared story. "Officers, I appreciate a thorough response, but you need to understand that our store has standards. We cannot let customers refuse instructions and dictate how security operates."

"Mr. Caldwell," Morales said, "we are investigating an allegation of physical contact with an elderly customer and a companion. The store's standards don't replace that process. Please step aside."

"This is my floor," Derek snapped.

"Then you'll want to cooperate while we determine what happened on it," she answered.

Grace Whitfield approached slowly from the handbag display. "Officer, I have video. I started recording when he threw the catalog into her lap. It shows him hitting her hand and kicking the chair."

Martin Vale came forward from the other side. "I have another angle. And I told him I saw him strike her. You can take my name and number."

The officers thanked them and explained how they could preserve and provide the recordings. Grace wrote down the time on a slip of paper from her purse. Martin gave his contact details and asked whether they needed him to stay. Both agreed to remain available. Neither had known Willa's identity when they recorded. The evidence mattered because of what they had witnessed, not because of whom the victim turned out to be.
