Murphy’s First Days at the Shelter After Arriving Covered in Mud
The moment he arrived at the shelter, the team carried him directly into the bathing room.
The shaggy dog was soaked in mud from his ears to his paws. Thick clumps of dirty fur hung from his thin frame, and dried debris had become tangled around his legs and belly. He stood stiffly inside the tub, too uncertain to sit and too exhausted to search for a way out.
Everyone began calling him Murphy.
No one knew how long Murphy had been outside. He had been found wandering near a rural road without a collar, tag, or anyone nearby who recognized him. When a volunteer opened the vehicle door, he hesitated for several minutes before allowing himself to be lifted inside.
At the shelter, Murphy avoided eye contact and flinched whenever someone reached above his head. Still, he never growled or tried to bite. He simply lowered his body and waited, as though he had learned that staying perfectly still was the safest response.
The team used warm water and worked slowly through his matted coat. Layers of dirt began washing into the bottom of the tub, revealing irritated skin and several small sores hidden beneath the fur.
Then a caregiver felt something unusual near Murphy’s lower chest.
The bath was stopped immediately, and the veterinarian was called into the room. Beneath one of the thickest mats was a swollen wound that had been completely concealed from view.
Until the surrounding fur could be removed, no one knew how serious it might be.
Murphy is now resting in a quiet kennel while the shelter’s veterinary team continues evaluating his health.
After his initial bath, the remaining mats were carefully clipped away rather than pulled or brushed out. Several had tightened close to his skin, making ordinary movement uncomfortable. Once his coat was cleared, the team found widespread irritation around his legs, belly, and chest, along with small areas where the skin had become inflamed.
The swollen wound beneath his chest was cleaned and examined. Fortunately, it was not as deep as the team initially feared, but it had become infected after remaining trapped beneath wet, dirty fur. Murphy has started antibiotics and pain medication, and the area is being cleaned and checked each day.
He was also dehydrated and moderately underweight when he arrived. Blood tests showed signs of inflammation but no immediate evidence of serious organ damage. He is receiving measured portions of nutritious food several times a day so that his body can adjust safely.
During his first evening, Murphy refused to eat while anyone remained near the kennel. Staff placed the bowl beside his blanket and watched through a camera instead. Once the hallway became quiet, he stood, smelled the food, and slowly finished nearly the entire meal.
His daily routine is intentionally calm.
Murphy goes outside early in the morning before the shelter becomes noisy. He walks only a short distance, keeping close to the wall and frequently looking back toward the door. Afterward, he receives breakfast, medication, and time to rest without unnecessary handling.
Most of the day is spent sleeping.
When caregivers enter, Murphy still lowers his head and watches their hands carefully. Sudden sounds cause him to freeze, but he has started recovering more quickly once the noise passes. Staff sit beside his kennel without forcing interaction, allowing him to decide whether he wants to move closer.
Yesterday, Murphy accepted a treat from a caregiver’s open palm for the first time. Later, instead of retreating to the far corner, he remained near the front of the kennel while she replaced his water.
His coat will need time to grow back evenly, and the infected wound must heal before he can be cleared for foster care. The team is also continuing to search for an owner, although no microchip was found during his examination.
Murphy is still frightened and physically tired. He is not playful yet, and he does not seek affection.
But he is eating, sleeping comfortably, and beginning to understand the new routine around him. The dog who arrived hidden beneath layers of mud now has a clean bed, proper treatment, and all the time he needs to feel safe again.
