“I told you not to.”

“That makes it worse.”

I stared at him.

“I thought you were comfortable but ordinary.”

“I am ordinary.”

“No, you’re not.”

“That’s debatable.”

“You know what I mean.”

He looked toward the house.

“I thought you and Mom had enough to retire modestly.”

“We do.”

“You have half a billion dollars in company equity.”

“On paper.”

“Stop doing that.”

“Doing what?”

“Making it smaller.”

His voice rose.

“You do it automatically.”

I became quiet.

Marek continued.

“You taught me to respect work. That was good.”

He breathed slowly.

“You taught me not to assume money would save me. Good.”

Another breath.

“But you also taught me that being honest about achievement was somehow dirty.”

I wanted to argue.

Could not.

“And then Courtney comes along.”

He continued.

“She sees the version you’re presenting.”

“She made assumptions.”

“Yes.”

“And you let her.”

I looked away.

“So did I.”

His voice softened.

“That’s the part I hate.”

I looked at him again.

“I started changing how I described you.”

“I noticed.”

“I asked you to say construction management.”

“Yes.”

Marek covered his face for a second.

“I’m ashamed of that.”

“You don’t have to be.”

“Don’t do that either.”

“What?”

“Let me off the hook because you love me.”

I smiled faintly.

“You really are your mother’s son.”

“I know.”

The porch boards creaked beneath us.

Finally, Marek said:

“You always say you gave me freedom because I didn’t know about the money.”

“Yes.”

He looked directly at me.

“Dad, I never had a safety net.”

A pause.

“But I also never had the truth.”

Then:

“You can’t call that a gift.”

I have not recovered from that sentence.

I do not expect to.

My granddaughter was born in September.

Her name is Elise Danuta Nowak.

Courtney chose the middle name.

That mattered to me more than I told her.

Marek called from the hospital.

His voice cracked when he said:

“She’s here.”

I drove over.

I did not enter the room immediately.

I stood outside for a minute.

Not because I was afraid of Courtney.

Because becoming a grandfather felt like stepping into a room Danuta should have been standing beside me to enter.

Eventually, Marek opened the door.

Elise was tiny.

Red-faced.

Angry at existence.

Courtney looked exhausted.

We looked at each other.

Months had passed since the shower.

“Walter.”

“Courtney.”

I approached the bed.

“She’s beautiful.”

Courtney smiled faintly.

“She looks like Marek.”

“Then give her time.”

That earned a real laugh.
