I have canceled the venue, officiant, vendors, guest notifications, and honeymoon.

You told me clearly what you intended to do tonight. I believed you.

Do not come back expecting me to reconsider in the morning.

We can arrange the apartment, finances, gifts, and your belongings later.

I will not discuss this tonight.

I hope the final night with Alex was worth the life you thought would still be waiting for you tomorrow.

I read it twice.

David read it once.

“Send it.”

I did.

At 12:16 a.m., Lauren’s phone began vibrating.

I know what happened next because she told me later.

She was at Alex’s apartment.

The first notifications had started earlier.

Her mother.

Her sister.

Two bridesmaids.

She ignored them.

She assumed wedding panic.

Someone forgot something.

Maybe a seating issue.

Maybe her mother was overthinking flowers.

Then the calls multiplied.

Her sister texted:

ANSWER YOUR PHONE.

Lauren apparently became irritated.

She picked up the phone.

First she saw the email from our wedding website.

Then messages from bridesmaids asking what was happening.

Then her mother:

CALL ME NOW.

Then my message.

She opened it.

The first line was:

There is no wedding tomorrow.

According to Lauren, she read it three times.

Then she called me.

I did not answer.

She called again.

Again.

Again.

At 12:21 she sent:

What the fuck are you doing?

Then:

Ethan answer me.

Then:

You cannot cancel our wedding without talking to me.

That one almost impressed me.

Our wedding.

The thing she had assumed would survive anything she chose to do the night before.

Then:

I told you I was coming back.

Then:

This is insane.

Then:

You’re punishing both families because you’re hurt.

That message confirmed I had made the right decision more than anything else she could have said.

I was not canceling because I wanted to punish her.

I was canceling because I was no longer willing to marry her.

Those were different things.

My father and mother arrived at David’s around twelve-thirty.

Rachel came fifteen minutes later.

Megan came downstairs after getting both children settled.

Nobody knew what to do.

So we sat around David’s kitchen table at one in the morning surrounded by coffee mugs while my canceled wedding existed somewhere outside the room like a building we had just watched collapse.

My mother asked:

“Are you sure you don’t want to wait until morning before making everything final?”

I looked at her.

“Would waiting change what she said?”

“No.”

“Would it change what she’s doing?”

“No.”

“Then what am I waiting for?”

She nodded.

That was the end of it.

My father asked:

“Do you need somewhere to stay?”

“I can’t go back tonight.”

“Stay with us.”

I eventually did.

At 1:03, Lauren called David.

He looked at the screen.

“Want me to answer?”

“No.”

He declined it.

She called Rachel.

Rachel looked at me.

I shook my head.

Rachel answered anyway.

I heard only her side.

“Hello.”

Pause.

“No.”

Longer pause.

“No, Lauren, I’m not putting him on.”

Another pause.

Then Rachel stood.

Her face changed.

“You told him you were going to sleep with Alex.”

Pause.

“You do not get to call that ‘closure.’”

That was the first time I heard the word.

Closure.

Lauren had apparently decided that was what the night represented.

One final physical goodbye to her past before entering marriage.
