“What does that mean?”
“Nothing.”
“You're weird.”
“So I've been told.”
We went back onto the court.
Here is what I know now.
Laura told a room full of people she had found someone better than me.
For a while, I thought the lesson was that she had been wrong.
That is the easy version.
The better version is harder.
There was never a contest.
Daniel did not win.
I did not win when he left.
Laura did not lose because the expansion collapsed.
I did not become more valuable because lawyers confirmed my name sat beneath assets everybody had taken for granted.
The marriage ended.
There is no trophy for that.
What I recovered was something quieter.
My ability to say no without believing no made me cruel.
My ability to care about another person's fear without automatically becoming responsible for removing it.
My ability to protect my own life without first waiting for everybody else to agree that I deserved protection.
For years, I thought love meant never keeping a ledger.
I still believe that.
But there is a difference between refusing to count favors and refusing to notice patterns.
I had confused the two.
I paid bills without mentioning them.
Provided space without formal agreements.
Signed guarantees because I trusted us.
Solved problems before Laura knew they existed.
Then, because I never spoke about any of it, the invisible support gradually became indistinguishable from the floor beneath her feet.
Nobody thanks a floor.
They simply assume it will remain.
Until one day it doesn't.
Laura thought my sentence at the restaurant meant I intended to take everything away.
“Then you won't miss what came with it.”
That was never what happened.
I did not take Laurel Row.
I did not empty accounts.
I did not destroy her reputation.
I did not call clients.
I did not contact Daniel.
I did not use her affair as entertainment.
I did not make her family repay old kindnesses.
