She looked up.
“What?”
“He was at the Linden that night.”
Ryan stared at the floor.
Melissa lifted the photo.
“This isn’t what it looks like.”
I almost smiled at the predictability.
“Which part?”
“Michael.”
“The part where you told me you were at Camden’s?”
Her lips parted.
“Or the part where I asked if anything was happening with Ryan and you told me no?”
A guest near the back quietly set down his drink.
Melissa looked around.
Suddenly she seemed aware that the audience she had enjoyed forty minutes earlier was still present.
“Can we talk upstairs?”
“No.”
Her eyes hardened.
“Seriously?”
“You made tonight public.”
“Don’t do this.”
“I’m not yelling.”
“I’m not insulting you.”
“I’m answering the question your gift is going to create.”
She looked inside the box.
Saw the charge statement.
The other images.
The letter.
Her hand shook as she unfolded it.
I watched her read.
Halfway down, she stopped.
“You’re separating from me?”
“Yes.”
The room went completely silent.
Melissa looked at me as though I had spoken another language.
“Over one kiss?”
Ryan closed his eyes.
I looked at her.
“No.”
She gestured toward the photograph.
“That’s all that happened.”
Ryan looked at her.
That tiny movement told me more.
I turned toward him.
“How long?”
Melissa snapped:
“Don’t answer him.”
Everyone looked at Ryan.
He went pale.
“Ryan.”
I kept my voice level.
“How long?”
He rubbed both hands across his face.
“Mike, man, I—”
“How long?”
“About five months.”
Melissa made a sound like she had been struck.
“You idiot.”
Ryan turned toward her.
“You told me he knew.”
I stared at her.
That sentence changed the room.
Melissa’s eyes widened.
Ryan continued, voice rising now because his own fear had taken over.
“You said your marriage was basically over.”
“I said we were having problems.”
“You said he didn’t care who you saw.”
“Shut up.”
“You told me you were waiting until after your birthday to tell him.”
My stomach tightened.
I had spent weeks preparing for the possibility that Melissa had been unfaithful.
I had not prepared for the strange sensation of discovering she had apparently scheduled the end of our marriage according to her convenience.
Jason muttered:
“Jesus.”
Melissa looked at me.
“Michael, please.”
“For what?”
“To let me explain.”
“I’ve been asking you to explain for weeks.”
“You never told me you knew.”
I stared at her.
“You needed proof in my hand before honesty became an option?”
She had no answer.
Ryan moved toward the door.
I looked at him.
“You can leave.”
Melissa turned.
“Ryan.”
He stopped.
For one second, they looked at each other.
The exciting secret had become something ordinary and ugly.
Consequences.
Ryan left without saying goodbye.
The front door closed behind him.
Nobody moved.
Melissa looked down at the box.
Then at our friends.
“Can everyone please leave?”
People began gathering coats.
Quickly.
Quietly.
No one wanted to remain inside our marriage.
Jason stopped beside me.
