“You need to stop right now. This work is not authorized.” “I’m just helping him cut his lawn. He can’t do this himself.” I didn’t violate any rules. I wasn’t causing trouble. I was just helping a man cut his lawn. That’s it. That’s all I was doing.

The city had sent him a notice. Bright paper, big letters. It said his grass was too high, and if it wasn’t fixed in ten days, they’d charge him seven hundred dollars. Seven hundred dollars for grass. I saw the notice taped to his door when I stopped by. He hadn’t even taken it down yet. Just stood there staring at it like it might disappear on its own.

I asked him what happened. He said the city inspector came by while he was at a doctor’s appointment. No warning, no knock, just a notice and a threat. He said they didn’t ask why, they just wrote it up. So I grabbed my mower and came back the next day. No plan, no camera, just a mower and some gas.

I started cutting. The grass was high, yeah, but not wild. Just the kind that happens when life gets heavy and your body doesn’t work the way it used to. About five minutes in, I heard tires crunch behind me. Police car. Then another. Two officers stepped out. One of them didn’t say anything, just stood there with his arms crossed, watching.

The other walked over and said, “You need to stop right now.” I turned the mower off. I said, “Is there a problem, officer?” He said, “You’re not allowed to do this.” I laughed a little, thinking he meant noise or time of day. I said, “I’m just helping him. The city sent a notice.” That’s when he said, “That notice is exactly why you need to stop.”

I pointed toward the house. “That’s the homeowner. He asked me to help.” That’s when the man walked outside. He moved slow, careful, like every step cost him something. He said, “Sir, I drive a school bus. Or I used to. I can’t do this myself.” The officer didn’t respond to that. He said this property is under a city compliance order. Only approved services can correct violations. Approved services, the kind that cost money he doesn’t have.

The second officer finally spoke up. He said, “If you keep mowing, we can cite both of you.” Both of us, for cutting grass. I looked at the lawn. Half of it was already done. Clean lines, almost finished. The man just stood there quiet. He wasn’t angry. He wasn’t yelling. He looked embarrassed, like he had done something wrong just by needing help.

I said, “So you’re telling me the city wants his lawn cut, but won’t let anyone help him do it?” The officer nodded. “Yes.” And that’s when it got worse. The officer stepped closer and pointed at the mower. “You need to move that off the lawn.” I asked him why. He said, “Because this work isn’t authorized.”
