“I need proof.”
Kesha reached carefully toward her wallet.
He watched.
She withdrew her official federal court identification.
Held it out.
Hutchins took it.
Photograph.
Name.
Seal.
Title.
He studied it.
Then said:
“This could be fake.”
His voice no longer sounded certain.
Kesha almost pitied him.
Almost.
“Call the courthouse.”
“What?”
“The public switchboard.”
She gave him the number from memory.
“Ask for Judge Langford’s chambers.”
The woman recording called out:
“I have all of this.”
Hutchins turned sharply.
“Stop interfering.”
“I’m on a public sidewalk.”
“You’re distracting an officer.”
Kesha said:
“Do not involve her.”
Hutchins looked back.
“Ma’am, step away from the car.”
“We are well past that.”
“Step away.”
“I already did.”
“Now.”
Kesha stepped farther from the Mercedes.
Hands still visible.
“What you should do now is return my credentials, call your supervisor, and document the error honestly.”
Hutchins stared.
“I don’t need legal advice from you.”
“No.”
Kesha’s voice remained calm.
“You need it from somebody.”
The woman filming covered a nervous laugh.
That made Hutchins angrier.
Kesha saw it.
Public embarrassment.
Authority challenged.
Audience growing.
Every element that could make a bad officer worse.
She tried one final time.
“Officer Hutchins.”
He looked at her.
“I am giving you an opportunity to de-escalate.”
“I’m in control here.”
“That sentence is exactly why you should call a supervisor.”
Something hardened in his face.
“Turn around.”
Kesha did not move.
“For what?”
“Turn around and put your hands behind your back.”
“Am I under arrest?”
“Yes.”
“For what offense?”
“Interfering with an investigation.”
Kesha stared.
“There is no lawful investigation remaining to interfere with.”
“Turn around.”
Her voice became almost judicial.
“State the charge clearly.”
“Obstruction.”
“By doing what?”
“Refusing lawful commands.”
“Which command?”
“Turn around.”
Kesha understood.
The logic had become circular.
The arrest justified the command.
The command justified the arrest.
She took a slow breath.
“If you are arresting me, I will not resist.”
Hutchins reached for the cuffs.
“But understand something.”
He stepped closer.
“My federal credentials are in your hand.”
He stopped for a fraction of a second.
“The video is recording.”
He took her wrist.
“The security camera is recording.”
The first cuff closed.
“And every choice from this second forward becomes evidence.”
The second cuff closed.
People nearby murmured.
The woman with the phone said:
“She’s not resisting.”
Hutchins ignored her.
He walked Kesha toward the patrol car.
Her back straight.
Head high.
The cuffs were tighter than necessary.
She said:
“They’re too tight.”
“You’ll be fine.”
“That request is also being recorded.”
He loosened nothing.
At the rear door, Kesha turned slightly.
“What is your badge number?”
