The officer was Michael Turner, forty-eight, square-jawed and broad through the shoulders, with a manner that suggested he preferred direct answers and short conversations. His younger partner, Aaron Cole, circled toward the patrol car's passenger side and surveyed the scene before approaching anyone. Cole looked at the open front door, the unloading crew, and the stacked furniture, while Turner stopped several feet from David.

"Step away from the vehicle," Turner ordered.

"It's my vehicle," David said.

"I didn't ask whose it was. I told you to move."

David moved three deliberate steps sideways. Clare stood behind Turner with her arms folded, watching as though the officer's command had already proved her correct. David kept his expression level, aware that a single impatient gesture could become the story everyone remembered later.

"What's your name?" Turner asked.

"David Brooks."

"Identification."

"It's in my back pocket. May I get it?"

"Slowly."

David removed his wallet with two fingers and handed over his driver's license. Turner inspected it, then looked toward the house and frowned at the address listed on the card. David had closed on the property recently and had not yet updated every record; there was nothing unusual about that, but Clare stepped forward at once.

"See? His license doesn't even have this address."

"I closed on the house twelve days ago," David explained. "The updated address hasn't reached the license yet. My closing paperwork is inside, and the county deed is public."

"You're not going inside," Turner said.

"I wasn't planning to go anywhere without telling you. I'm explaining how you can verify it."

Cole looked toward a mover carrying a folded dolly down the steps. "Are these people working for you, Mr. Brooks?"

"Yes. Raymond supervises the crew."

Raymond stopped and nodded from the porch. "That's right, Officer. Mr. Brooks booked the move, signed the inventory, and gave us the entry instructions."

Clare made an impatient noise. "Anybody could hire movers. That doesn't prove anything."

Turner told her they would speak to her shortly, but he remained physically positioned between her and David. David noticed how easily the officer accepted her presence inside his driveway while treating his own presence as something to be justified. It was not a dramatic act; it was a series of small decisions, each shifting the burden of explanation onto the man who had done nothing wrong.

"Where are the keys?" Turner asked.

"In my jacket pocket."

"The pocket your hand was in when we arrived?"

"Yes. My car keys, house keys, and a compass."

Clare leaned in. "That compass has our company logo. I told you, he's carrying things he can't explain."

Turner held out his hand. "Let me see it."

David removed the keys slowly, allowing the brass compass to swing beneath them. He knew the engraving would be visible. He also knew that explaining the object's history might take longer than simply proving the Ferrari belonged to him, and he had no desire to discuss a treasured private memory with an audience assembled to doubt him.

"Where'd you get this?" Turner asked.

"It was given to me years ago."

"By whom?"

"Someone I once worked with."

"Name?"

David hesitated. "With respect, I don't see how that helps determine whether the Ferrari is stolen."

Turner's jaw tightened. "I'll decide what's relevant here."

Cole intervened before the exchange could sharpen. "Mike, we can run the plate and VIN first. If there's a theft complaint, that should settle it."

David looked at him with quiet gratitude. "The registration is in the glove compartment. The VIN is visible through the windshield. I can also show digital insurance once you permit me to use my phone."
