The kitchen seemed suddenly smaller. A motorcycle roared past the open window, and somebody outside called for a child to come upstairs. Nkiru stared at the man she had married. "You were engaged to the woman who recommended you for the job that destroyed your reputation?" He nodded. "And in five years of marriage, you never thought I should know?" "It ended before I met you." "Then why was it a secret?" He tried to answer, but she was already shaking her head. "Don't tell me you hid it to protect me. I want the real reason."

"I knew how it would sound," he said. Nkiru's voice remained low. "You knew how it would feel." She stood and walked to their bedroom, not to leave him but because she needed enough distance to breathe. He followed her to the doorway and stopped. "There was nothing between us when I took that job," he said. "I didn't steal company money. Both things are true." She turned. "And a third thing is true. Every day you let me explain your dismissal to people who thought you were a thief, you let me do it without knowing the relationship that helped place you in danger."

Tobi looked as though he might collapse. She remembered the man at their wedding who held her hand so firmly during their vows. She remembered the blue tie, the meals shared over a table that barely fit into their first apartment. She wasn't ready to stop loving him. She was also no longer willing to mistake love for informed consent to a life built around undisclosed facts. "Sleep on the couch tonight," she said. "Tomorrow, we're going to talk about everything. And if you tell me another edited version, I don't know what happens after that."

That night Tobi remained in the living room until dawn. Nkiru lay awake, listening to a distant generator and the first buses beginning their routes. She thought about the elderly stranger at Meridian and the way he'd thanked her for an act she considered elementary. She had defended him because she believed a person's position shouldn't determine the truth about their worth. Now she faced a much harder problem: whether she could hold her husband to the same standard without allowing powerful strangers to decide the outcome for them.

Two days later, the first corporate investigation update arrived. Tunde had appointed an external audit team rather than asking Kunle's division to investigate itself. The auditors were instructed to preserve original records, examine access logs, identify the transaction's complete approval history, and report to a special committee that included independent directors. Folarin approved the expense without arguing. He had spent his life negotiating contracts worth far more than forty-two million naira, yet the story of one analyst's ruined career disturbed him in a way the largest balance-sheet loss never could.
