Charlie is 14 years old.

Rose is 11.

Both are senior dogs, but their personalities couldn't be more different.

Charlie is a Shepherd mix with a calm, gentle nature.

He moves slowly now.

His hearing has also become weaker with age.

Sometimes he doesn't notice when someone calls him.

Sometimes he continues walking even when someone is standing behind him.

Rose is a Beagle mix.

She is more alert.

She notices everything.

A sound in the hallway.

A door opening.

A person approaching.

And especially Charlie.

The shelter staff first realized how closely Rose watched him when they noticed something unusual during walks.

If Charlie walked ahead, Rose followed.

If he stopped, she stopped.

If he became distracted, she waited.

But there was something else.

If someone approached Charlie from behind, Rose would often move toward him.

She would gently touch her nose against his shoulder.

Charlie would turn around.

Then he would see Rose.

And he would follow her.

It became a quiet way for Rose to communicate with him.

She didn't bark.

She didn't pull him.

She simply touched him gently.

Charlie seemed to understand.

One afternoon, the shelter became especially busy.

Several dogs were barking.

Doors were opening.

People were walking through the hallway.

Charlie became confused by all the movement.

He stood near the back of the kennel.

Rose noticed.

She walked toward him.

She touched his shoulder with her nose.

Charlie turned.

Rose stood beside him.

Charlie moved closer.

Then he leaned his body against her.

They stayed that way for a moment.

Rose didn't move.

Charlie seemed to relax.

Eventually, both dogs lay down together.

The noise continued around them.

But they had created their own little quiet space.

That moment showed the staff how much these two rely on each other.

Charlie doesn't always need Rose to guide him.

But when he becomes uncertain, she seems to know what to do.

And Rose appears calmer when she knows Charlie is close.

They have their own little routines throughout the day.

At breakfast, Charlie eats slowly.

Rose usually finishes first.

But she doesn't wander far.

She waits nearby.

When Charlie finishes, they return to their bed together.

During walks, Rose sometimes wants to explore everything.

Charlie doesn't.

So she explores for a little while.

Then she comes back.

She checks on him.

And they continue walking.

Their pace is slow.

But they seem comfortable with it.

They have learned that there is no reason to rush.

Both dogs are old.

Charlie has the gray face and stiff movements that come with age.

Rose still has some energy, but she prefers quiet companionship over long periods of activity.

They enjoy naps.

They enjoy treats.

They enjoy sitting outside.

And they especially enjoy being near each other.

The shelter has two beds for them.

Charlie usually chooses the larger one.
