We were both angry enough to become allies too quickly.

But our marriages were separate.

Our children were separate.

We did not need revenge.

We needed facts.

I drove to Natalie’s.

She opened the door before I reached the porch.

One look at me and she stepped aside.

The children were asleep.

Sophie had taken the guest room.

Caleb had fallen asleep on the couch watching an animated movie.

I stood over him.

His hair was sticking up on one side.

One sock had come off.

There was chocolate on his cheek.

I thought about the photograph of him leaning against Jason.

A man who had been sleeping with his mother.

I wanted to wake him and ask what he remembered.

I didn’t.

Children are not evidence.

That became one of the most important things I reminded myself over the next year.

Natalie waited in the kitchen.

“What happened?”

I showed her the first photograph.

Her hand went over her mouth.

“Oh, Ethan.”

“Almost two years.”

“You know that?”

“Rachel found messages.”

“Who’s Rachel?”

“Jason’s wife.”

Natalie sat down.

“There’s a wife?”

“Yes.”

“Kids?”

“Yes.”

She closed her eyes.

“Jesus.”

I sat opposite her.

“Lauren took Sophie and Caleb with her.”

Natalie stared at me.

“To meet him?”

“Apparently.”

“When?”

“Our anniversary.”

Her face changed.

She remembered that anniversary too.

She was the one who had agreed to babysit before Lauren changed the plan.

“She told me Elaine was sick.”

“I know.”

Natalie said something then that helped me more than she knew.

“Do not decide custody tonight.”

I looked at her.

“I’m not.”

“Good.”

“She lied to you.”

“She cheated.”

“She involved the kids in ways she never should have.”

“But she is still their mother.”

“I know.”

“Remember that tomorrow too.”

I nodded.

I slept on Natalie’s couch.

Actually, I lay on it.

Sleep never really arrived.

At 12:38 a.m., Lauren sent:

Please answer.

At 12:51:

I’m sorry about the anniversary. It wasn’t what you think.

At 1:07:

Jason and I were not together then the way we are now.

I read that sentence several times.

The way we are now.

Not denial.

At 1:21:

Please don’t let Rachel poison this.

That one almost made me laugh.

At 2:03:

Can I see the kids tomorrow?

I answered only that one.

Yes. We’ll arrange it. They’re safe and asleep.

Her reply came instantly.

Thank you.

Then:

I love you.

I turned off the phone.

At seven the next morning, Sophie climbed onto the couch.

“Daddy?”

I opened my eyes.

“Hey.”

“You came back from Denver?”

I stared at her.

“Yes.”

“Did you bring anything?”

Children have a way of making enormous disasters briefly normal.

“No.”

She looked disappointed.

“I didn’t get to go shopping.”

“Okay.”
