find the ring on the kitchen counter. For several paragraphs she sounded genuinely hurt, and I believed that part because I was hurt too. Then the message shifted toward an explanation of how I had forced her to defend herself publicly, how my insecurity had made her feel trapped, and how anyone who loved her would have stayed to work things out.

I read the entire email once. I couldn't help noticing how often the sentences began with things I had done and how rarely they described a choice she could have made differently. She said she hadn't intended the post to embarrass me but didn't explain why she'd pinned Chris's joke about escaping the haters. She said the trip was innocent but still didn't acknowledge that planning it without a serious conversation might have hurt an engaged partner. The apology existed inside a larger argument that my reaction was the real problem.

The next email arrived before lunch with the subject You Have to Stop This. She wanted me to change my relationship status because coworkers and distant relatives were asking questions, and she said the public setting made her look abandoned. She didn't ask whether changing it would be dishonest now that I had ended the engagement. I told her those messages would be read and answered, while personal accusations or requests to relitigate the relationship would not. She responded by saying I was treating her like a difficult vendor. Maybe the comparison sounded unromantic, but by then there was no wedding, and keeping our obligations organized was one of the few ways I could prevent more damage.

The messages about the relationship continued anyway. Some were tender, remembering a Sunday when we had stayed inside during a snowstorm and made pancakes for dinner. Some were angry, accusing me of never being truly committed if a disagreement could make me leave. Others were composed enough that I briefly wondered whether she had finally understood my decision. But each one eventually returned to the same point: if I loved her, I would reopen the conversation on her terms.

I set a filter so messages from her personal accounts would bypass my main inbox. Necessary financial messages could reach me through the dedicated address I had given her, and I told her that system was still available. Everything else went into a folder I wasn't
