Since you think you're so clever, show everyone what else a maid can do. Hannah Reid stopped in the center of the Moretti ballroom. Around her, more than 70 guests watched. Valeria Santoro, Mafia boss Dante Moretti's fiancΓ©e, stood beside the champagne tower holding Hannah's serving tray. Ten minutes earlier, Hannah had caught a falling bottle before it smashed beside an elderly guest.
It had been instinct. A movement too fast for a normal housemaid. Valeria had noticed. Unfortunately, so had everyone else. I should return to the kitchen.
Valeria smiled. No, stay. She turned toward her personal security man, Bruno. Our little maid apparently has remarkable reflexes. Several guests laughed.
Hannah's face remained calm. Valeria tossed the empty tray onto the floor. Pick it up. Hannah looked at her. I can get another tray.
I said pick it up. Hannah bent down. Valeria deliberately placed one heel on the tray. Now Hannah understood. This wasn't about service.
It was humiliation. Ask nicely, Valeria said. Hannah slowly straightened. I'm not going to do that. The laughter disappeared.
Valeria stared at her. What did you say? I'll clean the floor. I'll serve your guests. But I won't beg you to move your shoe.
Valeria's face hardened. Bruno. The large security man stepped forward. Teach her how staff speak to their employers. Hannah's breathing changed.

Not from fear, from calculation. Please don't touch me. Bruno smiled. That sounded almost like a threat. It wasn't.
Hannah glanced toward the door. It was a warning. Bruno reached for Hannah's arm. What happened next took less than three seconds. Hannah moved.
There was no wild punching, no screaming. She redirected his momentum in one controlled motion. And suddenly the much larger man was on the carpet with Hannah holding him safely in place. Bruno couldn't move. The ballroom went silent.
Valeria's mouth fell open. Get off him. Hannah immediately released him and stepped backward. I asked him not to touch me. Bruno rose.
Humiliated. He lunged again. Enough. The single word came from the ballroom entrance. Dante Moretti had arrived.
Nobody had heard him enter. His black suit was still damp from the rain outside. His eyes moved from Bruno to Valeria, to the serving tray beneath her shoe, and finally to Hannah. What happened? Valeria rushed toward him.
She attacked Bruno. Dante looked at Bruno. The security man avoided his eyes. Did she? Bruno hesitated.
I tried to remove her from the room. Did she attack first? Silence. Hannah spoke quietly. No, sir.
Valeria snapped, "Of course she'd say that. " Dante walked toward Hannah. She expected anger. Instead, he looked at her hands. You could have hurt him. Hannah said nothing.
But you didn't. No. Why? Because I didn't need to. That answer changed something in his expression.
Dante turned to Valeria. Why was the tray under your shoe? Her face tightened. She was disrespectful. So, you made 70 people watch you embarrass her.
She's staff. Dante looked around the room. And that makes humiliation entertainment. Nobody answered. Valeria's cheeks flushed.
You're taking her side. I'm asking what happened before deciding anyone has a side. Then Dante noticed a small leather cord around Hannah's wrist. It had slipped from beneath her sleeve during the struggle. Attached to it was a worn bronze disc.
His expression changed instantly. Where did you get that? Hannah quickly pulled her sleeve down. My old instructor. Dante stepped closer.
What instructor? It doesn't matter. It matters to me. For the first time all evening, Hannah looked uncomfortable. Dante had seen that bronze symbol before.
A broken circle crossed by three narrow lines. Only one training school in the city had ever used it. The Voss Academy. It had closed eight years earlier after its founder, Gabriel Voss, vanished. And Dante had spent those eight years looking for him.
Who trained you? Dante asked. Hannah hesitated. Valeria laughed nervously. What does this have to do with anything?
Dante ignored her. Hannah. She finally answered. Gabriel Voss. The room seemed to lose all sound.
Dante stared at her. That's impossible. Why? Because Gabriel Voss disappeared after someone tried to kill my father. Hannah's expression changed.
He didn't disappear. Dante went completely still. What? Hannah looked around at the guests, then back at him. He went into hiding.
Dante's voice dropped. How would you know? Hannah swallowed. Because he was my father. And suddenly the maid Valeria had humiliated for everyone's amusement was connected to the one man Dante Moretti had been searching for most of his adult life.
Dante stared at Hannah. Gabriel Voss was your father? Yes. Valeria laughed. Convenient.
Hannah looked at her. I didn't come here to prove anything to you. Dante raised one hand. Everyone out. Within minutes, the ballroom emptied.
Only Dante, Hannah, Valeria, Bruno, and Dante's security chief, Marco, remained. Dante placed Hannah's bronze training disc on the table. My father believed Gabriel betrayed him. Hannah's expression hardened. My father believed yours was about to be murdered.
Dante went still. What? Eight years ago, Gabriel discovered someone was feeding your father false information about a rival family. Marco frowned. Who?
My father never told me. Dante stepped closer. Why would he disappear instead of warning us? He tried. Hannah looked at the bronze disc.
The night he went to meet your father, someone attacked him before he reached the estate. Dante's jaw tightened. Was he killed? No. He survived.
For six years. Silence. Hannah continued. He lived under another name. We moved constantly.
