“I wanted both parts of my life.”

There it was.

The first completely honest sentence she had given me in months.

I nodded slowly.

“I believe you.”

Vanessa’s eyes filled.

“You were safe.”

I almost did not understand.

“What?”

“You were safe, Ethan. Our home was safe. Our life was safe.”

“And Logan?”

“He made me feel…”

She struggled.

“Alive?”

Her face tightened.

“Yes.”

The oldest word in the book.

I looked around our living room.

The couch we had chosen together.

The framed photograph from Maine.

The rug Vanessa made me help carry through three furniture stores because every delivery estimate was too slow.

“Safe sounds good when you’re building a life.”

“I know.”

“Apparently it becomes an insult once somebody else makes you excited.”

“That’s not what I meant.”

“It’s what you said.”

Vanessa wiped beneath one eye.

“You stopped seeing me.”

I actually laughed then.

Not loudly.

“I stopped seeing you?”

“You came home tired. You opened your laptop after dinner. We did the same things every weekend.”

“So you slept with your coworker.”

“It didn’t begin like that.”

“It never does in the explanation afterward.”

Her face hardened.

“You think you were perfect?”

“No.”

That stopped her.

“I think I was your husband.”

She looked away.

“And I think you decided my imperfections gave you permission to lie.”

“I tried to change the rules.”

“After you broke them.”

That sentence landed.

Vanessa sank back into the chair.

For several moments, neither of us spoke.

Then I asked:

“Did you know about Chicago before you proposed the arrangement?”

She hesitated.

“Yes.”

“How long?”

“Logan was being considered.”

“Did you know you might go with him?”

“We talked about it.”

“Before July?”

“Yes.”

The room seemed to get quieter.

“So Friday nights weren’t freedom.”

“They were part of it.”

“They were you testing a replacement life.”

“That’s cruel.”

“It’s accurate.”

“No.”

“You looked at apartments.”

Her face went pale again.

“Caroline told you that too.”

“Yes.”

“Nothing was signed.”

“Vanessa, you put your name on an apartment application with another woman’s husband.”

“We were exploring.”

“That is an impressive word.”

She stood again.

“Stop talking to me like I’m a criminal.”

“I’m not.”

“You’re interrogating me.”

“No. I’ve barely asked ten questions in nine weeks.”

That shut her up.

I walked into the kitchen.

Poured a glass of water.

My hands were steadier than I expected.

Vanessa followed.

“Are you filing for divorce?”

“Yes.”

The word came easily.

Her face collapsed.
