"I made it for you," Lily said. "Because you were on the road and Dad found you. Now other people get help too." Victoria looked at Ethan, who appeared as surprised as she was. "Thank you," she told Lily. "I'm going to put this somewhere important."

At the door, Ethan held out his hand again, cleaner this time but still marked by years of work. "I don't think I ever thanked you properly," he said. Victoria shook her head. "You don't owe me thanks for allowing your shop to compete for work. You did the work. You passed the tests."

"I know," he said. "I'm thanking you for making sure the tests were fair." That was harder for Victoria to dismiss. She held his hand a moment longer and said, "Then let's both make sure they stay fair."

She drove away with Lily's drawing resting on the passenger seat and the sound of Ethan's laughter still in her memory. The new sign disappeared in the rearview mirror, and the city unfolded ahead of her, full of businesses she had never visited and people whose names she did not know. It occurred to her that she could spend the rest of her life learning how much she had overlooked. For the first time, the thought did not exhaust her.

Winter returned, and with it the kind of weather that made every small business owner's carefully arranged schedule feel provisional. A hard freeze delayed parts deliveries for two days, and a storm forced Caine Mobility to reschedule several nonessential vehicle inspections. Ethan watched the forecast from his office window while the repaired roof held against a long night of rain. He thought back to the year before, when a leak had meant moving inventory away from water and a slow week could mean choosing which bill to pay late.

The shop still had problems. The tire machine was aging, a supplier sometimes sent the wrong part, and customers continued arriving with emergencies that no appointment system could anticipate. But Ethan now had people to help, a reserve account for the unexpected, and a family that saw him at dinner more often than not. He could experience an ordinary difficult day without treating it as proof that everything was about to fall apart.

On the anniversary of the highway repair, Rachel brought a cake to the shop after closing. Ethan was embarrassed by the attention, especially when she explained to Luis and Jamie that the celebration marked the night her brother had almost frozen while refusing to take money from a billionaire. "You make it sound like a national holiday," he complained. Rachel set down the cake. "For this family, it's the day you finally learned that letting someone help doesn't mean you failed. That's worth cake."
