“You even got a last name, old-timer? Or did they run out of budget for that, too?” The name tag skidded across the concrete floor. Thirty men watched. Not one of them moved.

The old janitor bent down slow and picked it up, wiped it clean on his sleeve. Then he looked up at the man in the thousand-dollar suit. “I don’t go looking for trouble,” he said quietly. “But I don’t run from it either when it comes looking for me.” Nobody in that factory knew what those words really meant. Not yet.

Not the thugs who came to threaten a thirty-two-year-old single mother out of her father’s company. Not the man who spent twenty-five years planning to take it. And certainly not Clare Whitfield, who had walked past that janitor every morning for twelve years without ever once asking who he used to be. Three days later, the whole town would find out.

Colton Falls, Ohio, does not look like much from the highway. Just a water tower, a few church steeples, a stretch of brick buildings that have seen better decades. But if you slow down, if you turn off Route 9, you will find something that still works the old way. A factory. Whitfield Precision Manufacturing, closing in on fifty years old.

The kind of place where the same families have worked for three generations. Where the whistle still blows at six o’clock in the morning, just like it did when Robert Whitfield built the first machine shop with his own hands. Robert didn’t start it alone. Not really. A young business partner stood beside him in those early years. Someone with money and ideas and a temper he never quite learned to manage.

That partnership ended badly twenty-five years back when Clare was still a small girl playing under her father’s desk. Robert almost never spoke of it. He just kept building, kept his word, kept the doors open year after year through every recession that tried to close them. Back then, half of Colton Falls worked one shift or another inside those brick walls. Some families still do.
