30 seconds remained. Instinct finally kicked in for Trent. It was the wrong kind of instinct. Blinded by watering eyes and searing chest pain, he reached out with his left hand trying to grab Samuel's leg to initiate a wrestling takedown. It was a standard reaction on the mats.
You get hurt, you change levels, you go for a double leg. But Samuel was not a static grappling dummy, and this was not a sanctioned match with a referee waiting to blow a whistle. Samuel saw the hand drop. He simply stepped back with his lead foot, removing the target entirely. As Trent overextended, grasping at empty space, Samuel brought his right knee upward in a short vicious arc.
He didn't aim for the head. He aimed for the soft unprotected tissue of the floating ribs on Trent's left side. The impact was a dull sickening thud. Trent's mouth opened in a silent scream. A sharp localized agony radiated through his flank.
He felt something shift beneath his skin. A terrible grinding sensation that short-circuited his nervous system. His legs turned to liquid. The martial arts master, the apex predator of the suburban strip mall, was now completely helpless. Held upright solely by a janitor's calloused fist twisted into his collar.
20 seconds. The spectators on the blue puzzle mats were frozen in a collective paralysis. Jason, the lanky college student, stood with his mouth slightly ajar, his hands twitching uselessly at his sides. A woman named Rachel, who had joined the gym to feel empowered after a bad divorce, pressed a hand over her mouth, her eyes wide with a terrifying mixture of horror and profound realization. They were watching the systematic dismantling of an illusion.
Every rehearsed counterattack, every philosophical lecture about kinetic dominance Trent had spoon-fed them evaporated in the face of true predatory efficiency. Trent gagged finally managing to draw a shallow rattling breath. The oxygen fueled a sudden desperate surge of survival adrenaline. He thrashed wildly throwing his heavy shoulders back trying to rip himself free from the grip on his lapel. He kicked out blindly with his right leg a sloppy panicked strike aimed anywhere at Samuel's lower body.
Samuel absorbed the chaotic energy like a sponge. He didn't resist the backward pull. He flowed with it. He stepped forward entering Trent's personal space again completely crowding the desperate man. As Trent's leg came up for the sloppy kick Samuel simply kicked the supporting leg.
He drove the heel of his heavy work boot directly into the side of Trent's left calf right on the thick band of muscle below the knee. The human body is an architectural marvel but it relies on a foundation. Destroy the foundation and the building falls. Trent's left leg buckled inward his center of gravity collapsed. He fell hard but Samuel still controlled the descent.
He didn't want Trent hitting the floor and rolling away. He wanted total undeniable containment. As Trent crashed down onto his side violently slapping the hardwood floor Samuel went down with him. 10 seconds. It wasn't a grappling exchange.
It was a restraint. Samuel pinned Trent's ruined left arm under his own knee driving his weight down into the bicep. Simultaneously he maintained the iron grip on the lapel pulling Trent's upper body tight against his thigh. With his free right hand Samuel reached over and grabbed the lapel on the opposite side of Trent's neck. He crossed his wrists creating an X right over Trent's throat.
It was a crude variation of a cross collar choke but it lacked the refined elegance of sport jiu-jitsu. It was ugly. It was tight. It was designed to sever the blood flow to the brain in seconds. Samuel leaned his weight backward applying slow immense pressure.
Trent's eyes widened in absolute terror. He was trapped. His right arm was numb and useless. His left arm was pinned under a knee that felt like an anvil. His ribs burned with every shallow gasp.
And now the blood supply to his brain was being ruthlessly clamped shut. He looked up at the man holding his life in his hands. Samuel's face remained a mask of profound emptiness. There was no joy in his eyes. There was no triumph.
There was no ego. He wasn't trying to prove a point to the audience. He was simply neutralizing a threat with the mechanical indifference of a machine pressing scrap metal. Five seconds. The pressure on Trent's neck increased.
The world around the edges of his vision began to turn a fuzzy dark gray. The fluorescent lights overhead seemed to dim humming a sinister distant tune. He tried to speak, to apologize, to surrender, but his vocal cords were crushed under the thick cotton of his own gi. He was drowning on dry land. Four.
Three. Two. Trent's hips bucked in a final involuntary spasm of panic. His remaining functional hand, previously trapped, managed to slide free just enough to slap the hardwood floor in a frantic desperate rhythm. Tap.
Tap. Tap. He slapped the floor again, harder. Tears finally spilling over his eyelids mixing with the sweat on his flushed swollen face. One second.
The 40 seconds were up. The fake king was dead. Blood roared in Trent's ears like a runaway freight train. He kept slapping the floor long after his hand had gone numb from the impact. Tap, tap, tap.
He wasn't just signaling submission to a hold, he was begging for his life, pleading with a universe he suddenly realized he did not control. The frantic rhythm of his hand on the wood was the only sound in the cavernous room, a pathetic drumbeat of shattered pride. Samuel held the choke for exactly two more seconds. He needed to be absolutely certain the fight response had been entirely burned out of the man beneath him. He watched the panicked flutter of Trent's eyelids, felt the pathetic trembling weakness in the heavy limbs.
Then, with the same mechanical detachment he used to wring out a mop, Samuel let go. He released the lapels. He lifted his knee off Trent's pinned arm. He stood up, his movement slow and deliberate, utterly unbothered by the sudden rush of adrenaline that usually leaves men shaking after a violent encounter. He didn't back away in a fighting stance.
