A purple belt named Jonah failed to react correctly.

Ryan said:

“Come on, man.”

“You’ve done this a thousand times.”

Jonah tried again.

Failed.

Students laughed.

Ryan smiled.

“Apparently a thousand and one.”

Jonah smiled too.

But Naomi noticed the shoulders.

Embarrassment.

Later Ryan paired a large blue belt with a woman named Kara.

Kara was maybe five-foot-six.

Experienced.

Ryan told the larger man:

“Don’t baby her.”

Kara looked at him.

“I didn’t ask him to.”

Ryan laughed.

“Exactly.”

The round started.

Nothing unsafe.

Still, Naomi noticed the wording.

Don’t baby her.

As though the only alternatives were disrespectfully gentle or aggressively hard.

Good training required something more precise.

Match the person.

Match the purpose.

Mia whispered:

“You’re doing the face.”

“What face?”

“The coaching face.”

“I’m sitting.”

“You can coach while sitting.”

Naomi rolled her eyes.

“Watch class.”

Near the end, Elena returned from the office.

Ryan announced a demonstration.

“Let’s show what happens when somebody thinks wrestling alone solves everything.”

A few students laughed.

Naomi knew immediately.

No.

Ryan looked toward her.

“College wrestler.”

“Come here.”

Naomi shook her head.

“No.”

“Technical.”

“No.”

Mia looked at her.

Not pushing.

Good.

Elena said:

“Ryan.”

He smiled.

“I’m kidding.”

Then looked toward Naomi again.

“You’re safe.”

Naomi’s expression changed.

“I didn’t say I was afraid.”

Ryan paused.

The room heard.

He smiled again.

“Then come on.”

Elena stepped closer.

“She already declined.”

That should have ended it.

Instead one of Ryan’s students said:

“Coach is scared of the wrestler.”

People laughed.

Ryan laughed too.

Naomi looked at Mia.

Mia looked uncomfortable now.

That mattered.

Naomi could leave.

Probably should.

Then Ryan said:

“Thirty seconds.”

“Just position.”

“No submissions.”

“Let the class see wrestling versus jiu-jitsu movement.”

Naomi looked at Elena.

Not Ryan.

“You supervising?”

Elena hesitated.

“Yes.”

“Thirty seconds?”

“Yes.”

“No submissions?”

“Yes.”

“Technical?”

“Yes.”

Naomi stood.

Mia whispered:

“You don’t have to.”

Naomi looked at her.

That sentence made the choice clean.

“I know.”

Then she stepped onto the mat.

She removed her socks.

No rash guard.

Plain T-shirt.

Ryan looked amused.

“Anything I should know?”

Naomi answered:

“Yes.”

His eyebrows lifted.

She continued:

“If I say stop, stop.”

Ryan smiled.

“Of course.”

Naomi nodded.

Good.

They moved to the center.

Then he said it.

“Try to keep up.”

Eleven seconds later, he tapped.

And the entire evening changed.

After the demonstration, Naomi did not stay.

Mia followed her to the parking lot.

“You okay?”

“Yes.”

“You seem mad.”

“I am.”

“At him?”

“Partly.”

“At yourself?”

Naomi looked at her sister.

“How do you do that?”

“Live with you.”

Fair.

Naomi unlocked the car.

Mia got in.

Neither spoke until they reached the first traffic light.

Then Mia said:

“You were really good.”

Naomi stared at the road.

“I caught one position.”

“He’s a black belt.”

“Yes.”

“And you trapped him.”

“Yes.”

“In eleven seconds.”

Naomi sighed.

“Do not become the internet.”

Mia laughed.

Then became serious.

“Why didn’t you tell them you were good?”

Naomi gripped the steering wheel.

“Because I didn’t go there for me.”

“Still.”

Naomi waited.

Mia asked:

“How good were you?”

Naomi looked over.

“You know.”

“No.”

“I know you wrestled.”

“I know Dad coached.”

“I know you have medals in that box Mom refuses to throw away.”

Naomi smiled faintly.

“Your mother believes trophies are furniture.”

Mia continued:

“Were you like national champion?”

“No.”

“Close?”

“Once.”

“What about jiu-jitsu?”

“Purple belt.”

Mia’s eyes widened.

“You have a purple belt?”

“Somewhere.”

“Why did you say you barely trained?”

“I said I used to.”

“That is lying with technically true words.”

Naomi smiled despite herself.

“Dad taught you that phrase.”

“Yes.”

Silence.

Then Mia asked:

“Why did you quit?”

Naomi’s smile disappeared.

She could have given the short answer.

Injury.

School.

Life.

Instead:

“Because after Dad died, I turned training into punishment.”

Mia looked toward her.

Naomi kept watching the road.

“I thought if I stopped moving, everything would catch me.”

Mia became quiet.

Naomi continued:

“So I competed.”

“Trained.”

Lifted.”

“Whatever.”

“I told myself discipline was helping.”

“It wasn’t.”

“Then I hurt my shoulder.”

“And for the first time I couldn’t escape into practice.”

She paused.

“I realized I didn’t know whether I still loved any of it.”

Mia stared out the window.

“Do you now?”

Naomi thought.

“Some parts.”

“Was tonight one?”

“No.”

That answer surprised both of them.

Mia asked:

“Why?”

“Because I knew what Ryan wanted.”

“What?”

“To use me.”

“For what?”

“To look good.”

Naomi changed lanes.

“And I said yes anyway.”

Mia frowned.

“But you beat him.”

Naomi looked over.

“Do you hear yourself?”

Mia stopped.

Naomi continued:

“That’s exactly the trap.”

“If I only feel okay about being pressured because I ended up getting the better position…”

“…then I’m saying the pressure would have been acceptable if I lost.”

Mia became quiet.

“Right.”

“The problem started before the round.”

Naomi said.

“Not after.”

That was the first lesson.

By midnight, the video had been posted.

Naomi knew because Mia sent it from the bedroom twenty feet away.

WATCH THIS.

Naomi replied:

NO.

Mia:

IT HAS 9K VIEWS.

Naomi:

I AM TRYING TO SLEEP.

Mia:

COMMENTS THINK YOU’RE FBI.

Naomi sat up.

WHAT?

Mia sent a screenshot.

The girl moves like she’s federal.

Naomi stared.

Then laughed hard enough to wake their mother.

Denise opened the bedroom door.

“What is happening?”

“Mia says I’m FBI.”

Denise stared.

“I have two jobs and neither pays enough for this family.”

Then she left.

By morning, the clip had forty thousand views.

BLACK BELT TELLS QUIET GIRL “TRY TO KEEP UP” — REGRETS IT IMMEDIATELY

Naomi hated “girl.”

She was twenty-four.

Then she read three comments and hated everything else more.

She must be special forces.

Probably trained by Navy SEALs.

That guy’s fake black belt.
