The Cop Humiliated the Old Man in Front of His Neighbors — Then Two Strangers Walked Up
Chapter 4
"We never touched your agents," Darius snarled. "You will have," Cole said smoothly. "Agent Torres, please show some bruises when you write your report. " Mallerie advanced on Darius with handcuffs and a steel baton. Finally get to finish what we started, boy. Darius stepped protectively in front of Odell.
You want her? You go through me. Mallerie grinned behind his mask. happy to. The baton cracked across Darius's ribs. He stumbled but stayed upright.
Mallerie swung again, catching him across the shoulder. Darius absorbed the blow and drove his fist into Mallerie's solar plexus. The tactical officers opened fire with tasers. Electricity coursed through Darius's body, dropping him to his knees. Mallerie kicked him in the stomach, then brought the baton down across his back.
Stop it, Odell cried. Shut up, you stubborn old man. Mallerie panted, raising the baton again. Donovan lunged forward, but two officers tackled him to the ground. He threw one man off, but the second taser caught him center mass.
His muscles seized as voltage tore through him. Elena tried to reach her radio, but Torres grabbed his wrist and twisted until she screamed. Rusk watched the beating with satisfaction. 20 years I've been patient. 20 years I let you live because I thought you'd stay quiet.
He kicked Darius's ribs. Biggest mistake of my life. Mallerie cuffed Darius's hands behind his back, then hauled him upright. Blood ran from Darius's nose and mouth. His left eye was swelling shut.
Book him for assault on federal agents, conspiracy to distribute false evidence, and domestic terrorism, Russ. This is all fabricated, Elena protested. Prove it, Cole said. Your testimony won't matter once I declare you mentally unstable from combat stress. She nodded to Mallerie.
Take the old man somewhere quiet. Make sure she disappears permanently this time. Odell lifted her chin defiantly. You can kill me, but the truth won't die with me. Actually, it will.
Cole smiled coldly. Amazing how quiet the truth becomes when everyone who knows it is buried. While the officers focused on loading Darius into an armored transport, Elena caught Donovan's eye and mouthed, "Go! " Donovan rolled behind a concrete pillar, his muscles still twitching from the taser shock. Elena created a distraction by accidentally dropping her keys, then diving to retrieve them. The metallic clatter echoed through the garage.
During the confusion, Donovan limped toward the van's driver's side door. "There! " Torres shouted. Donovan gunned the engine and back toward Elena. She dove through the open side door as bullets shattered the rear window. "Get Odell! " Elena screamed.
But tactical officers were already forcing the old man into the elevator with rusk. Mallerie sprinted toward his patrol car. They're not getting away this time. Donovan floored the accelerator, tires screaming against concrete as they spiraled down the parking structures exit ramp. Behind them, Mallerie's patrol car roared in pursuit, its engine modified for high-speed chases.
They burst onto the street as morning traffic began building. Donovan ran two red lights, weaving between delivery trucks and early commuters. Elena clutched the dashboard, his face white with terror. Mallerie stayed close behind them, ramming their rear bumper whenever they slowed for intersections. "He's trying to flip us," Elena shouted.
Donovan took a hard right onto Riverbridge Road. The old steel bridge stretched ahead, morning sun glinting off its cables. Construction signs warned of ongoing maintenance work. One lane closed, temporary barriers channeling traffic into a narrow passage. Mallerie pulled alongside them, forcing the van toward the barrier.
Hold on. Donovan yanked the wheel left. The van clipped Maller's front fender, but his heavier patrol car recovered quickly. He accelerated, ramming them again from the side. The van broke through the construction barrier.
For one terrible moment, they were airborne above the river. Then gravity claimed them, and they plunged toward the maintenance road 30 ft below. The impact shattered every window. Elena's head struck the dashboard, and she went limp. Donovan's ribs screamed as the steering wheel compressed his chest.
Blood ran from his scalp where metal had cut him. When the world stopped spinning, he looked frantically around the destroyed vehicle. Elena was unconscious but breathing. Odell was gone. Donovan's ribs screamed as he dragged himself through the van's shattered windshield.
Blood dripped from his forehead onto the cracked asphalt of the maintenance road. The vehicle had rolled three times before slamming into a concrete drainage channel, and now smoke poured from the crumpled engine compartment. Elena. He crawled back toward the passenger side where her limp form hung upside down in her seat belt. Come on, wake up.
The smell of leaking gasoline filled his nostrils. They had maybe minutes before the whole thing went up. Donovan forced his battered hands to work, cutting Elena's belt with his utility knife. She groaned as he pulled her free, her left arm hanging at an odd angle. Above them on the bridge, sirens wailed as emergency vehicles arrived at the crash site.
"Can't Can't feel my shoulder," Elena mumbled, her eyes fluttering open. "We got to move. " Donovan lifted her carefully, his own vision blurring from the head trauma. "Gas leak," he carried her 50 yards down the maintenance road before the van erupted in a ball of orange flame. The explosion echoed off the bridge supports, sending black smoke billowing into the morning sky. Donovan spotted a storm drain tunnel entrance built into the riverbank.
He carried Elena inside just as the first fire trucks began descending toward the wreckage. The concrete tunnel stretched into darkness, wide enough for maintenance crews, but hidden from the road above. Elena's head rolled against his shoulder as consciousness returned. Odell? Where's Odell?
They got her. Donovan set Elena down against the tunnel wall, checking her pupils for signs of concussion. Cole's people took her while Mallerie was chasing us. "Service corridor," Elena whispered, touching her injured shoulder. "I saw Slade's private security guards forcing her through the courthouse service corridor.
They had a black SUV waiting in the underground garage. Donovan's tool case had somehow survived the crash, thrown clear during the first roll, he opened it with trembling fingers, praying the second server copy had made it through the impact. The reinforced drive showed damage along one edge, but the indicator light still pulsed green. It's alive, he breathed. Elena watched him connect the drive to his military tablet.
What's on there? Everything. Donovan's fingers worked the keyboard despite his injuries. Property seizures, warrant manipulations, financial transfers, but nothing about where they take Odell. A hidden audio file appeared in the directory structure.
Donovan played it through the tablet speakers, and Cole's voice filled the tunnel. The warrants need to be backdated by 6 hours. Make sure the timestamps show probable cause before the alleged incident occurred. If anyone asks, the delay was administrative processing. This proves she manipulated the system, Elena said, struggling to sit up straighter.
But we need federal help now. Local courts won't touch this after what happened. Elena pulled out her personal phone, hands shaking as she dialed. Special Agent Voss, this is Officer Elena Vargas, Metro PD. I need to transmit evidence of civil rights violations involving police corruption.
20 minutes later, they watched the audio file upload to the FBI's secure server. Agent Voss confirmed receipt and promised immediate action, but warned that locating Odell would require more specific intelligence. Donovan closed the tablet, frustration burning in his chest. Darius was locked up somewhere, probably being beaten for information he didn't have. Odell had vanished into Slade's network of properties and private security.
The evidence might eventually bring down the conspiracy, but it wouldn't save the people he loved. Then his tablet chimed softly. A new signal had appeared on his tracking application. Faint but steady, transmitting on the emergency frequency he'd programmed into Odell's cane years earlier. The signal originated from somewhere northeast of the city beyond the industrial district, Slade's abandoned textile mill.
Odell woke to the smell of rust and machine oil. his wrists burned against thick rope, and the plastic chair beneath her creaked with every movement. The blindfold pressed tight against his sunglasses, but her captors had wasted their time. Darkness meant nothing to someone who had lived without sight for 20 years. He listened carefully, mapping the space around her. Water dripped somewhere to her left, each drop echoing off concrete walls before splashing into a puddle below.
The sound told her the ceiling rose at least 15 ft above her head. Air moved through the room from two directions. Cold drafts from her right suggested a broken loading door, while warm currents behind her indicated an interior passage. A freight train rumbled past outside, close enough to vibrate through the floor. The mill sat near the old industrial rail line, exactly where Donovan's signal had originated.
Footsteps approached across the concrete. Two sets, one heavy and confident, the other lighter, but more nervous. Look who's finally awake. Gideon Slade's polished voice carried the same arrogance she remembered from their phone conversations. The stubborn old man who cost me millions of dollars.
Cost you? Odell kept his voice steady. You mean the houses you stole from families who trusted the police? Those people signed legal documents. I provided fair market value for condemned properties.
After your friend Rusk fabricated the inspections, Slade's footsteps circled behind his chair. Where's the encryption key, Odell? That cane of yours is more sophisticated than it looks. My technicians can't crack the security without the password. What makes you think I'd tell you anything?
The second voice belonged to Chief Rusk, cold and brutal. because you ruined everything by raising those boys to become Marines. If you'd kept your mouth shut and let them live normal lives, none of this would have happened. " Odell turned her head toward his voice. "You're afraid of two men you could have killed as children. That tells me everything about your character. " "I should have killed them," Rusk snarled. "Should have burned down your house with all three of you inside it 20 years ago.
But you didn't. You let fear control your decisions then, and you're letting it control them now. Slade's shoes scraped against concrete as he moved closer. Cole delivered exactly what she promised. The courthouse arrest, the federal betrayal, even the media coverage painting your Marine boys as unstable veterans.
The public believes every word. Cole works for you. Deputy Attorney General Marin Cole works for whoever pays her the most, Rusk said with satisfaction. She's been covering our operations for eight years. Legal immunity in exchange for a percentage of every development contract.
Odell absorbed this information while testing the rope around his left wrist. Behind the chair, his fingers found a sharp bolt protruding from what felt like an old control panel. if she could work the rope against the metal edge without drawing attention. The stolen evidence is buried 6 feet under Magnolia Street. Slade continued. Bodies, financial records, audio recordings, everything your precious Elijah and Simone collected before they died.
This afternoon, we pour reinforced concrete foundations for the new training complex. 20 ft thick, steel reinforced, permanent. You're destroying graves. I'm finishing what should have been completed decades ago. Slade's voice turned vicious.
Your neighborhood was supposed to disappear quietly. Instead, you turned it into a war zone. Odell worked his wrist against the bolt, feeling the rope fibers separate one strand at a time. The binding loosened slightly, but she kept his expression neutral. Where are the twins now?
Darius is in county lockup, probably getting his ribs broken by inmates who don't like cop killers, Rusk said. Donovan's truck went off the Riverside Bridge. We're still dragging the river for his body. The words hit like physical blows, but Odell refused to show weakness. She had spent 20 years protecting these men.
He would not let their enemies see her break now. Heavy footsteps echoed from the interior passage. A door slammed open and new boots approached across the concrete floor. Sir. An unfamiliar voice addressed Rusk.
We've got a problem at the courthouse. Federal agents are demanding to see the Marine. Rusk cursed under his breath. How many agents? Six cars, maybe more.
They're not local FBI. These look like civil rights investigators. Slade's confident tone wavered. That's impossible. Cole assured us the federal involvement was contained.
More footsteps approached and Odell heard someone dragging a heavy object across the floor. Metal scraped against concrete followed by the distinctive tap she had been listening for his cane. Change of plans, Rusk announced, his voice closer now. Agent Voss is asking too many questions, and my contacts at the jail say federal marshals are coming for Darius within the hour. The rope around Odell's left wrist had loosened enough for her to slip two fingers through the binding.
He kept perfectly still, waiting for the right moment. "You have one chance to save that boy's life," Rusk continued, and she could hear him hefting his cane like a weapon. "Unlock this device and tell me where you hid the original evidence. Refuse! " And Darius dies during a staged prison escape attempt before the marshals arrive. The metal table creaked as Rusk placed Odell's white cane across its surface with deliberate force.
The familiar weight and balance she had depended on for 20 years now lay beyond her reach, positioned like evidence at a trial. "Turn it on," Rusk commanded. Slade's manicured fingers fumbled with electronic controls. "Recording device is active. Audio levels are good.
State your name for the record. " Odell lifted her chin defiantly. You know my name. Say it anyway. Rusk's voice carried the authority of decades commanding subordinates. Make this easy on yourself.
