The King Tried to Sacrifice the Last Dragon Caller… Until the Dragon Chose the Prisoner Instead of the Crown
STORY – PART 1The iron chains cut into my wrists as soldiers dragged me down the center aisle of the Crystal Hall.
Thousands watched in complete silence.
Some looked relieved.
Others looked ashamed.
None dared speak.
At the end of the hall stood King Aldric wearing the Crown of Ember, its crimson jewels glowing beneath the towering stained-glass ceiling.
Beside him rested the ancient Dragon Blade.
The weapon said to have ended the Age of Dragons.
"My people," Aldric declared, his voice echoing through the chamber.
"The final dragon witch stands before us."
The crowd erupted.
"Witch!"
"Monster!"
"Burn her!"
I kept my eyes on the polished marble floor.
If I looked up...
I'd see my little brother kneeling beside the execution platform.
His life depended on my silence.
The king smiled.
"Kneel."
I remained standing.
Two guards slammed the backs of my knees.
Pain shot through my legs.
Still...
I refused to bow.
Aldric descended the throne steps slowly.
"You could have lived quietly."
"You hunted my family."
"They harbored monsters."
"They protected dragons."
"They protected the truth."
His smile vanished.
"There are no dragons left."
I looked directly into his eyes.
"You made sure of that."
He raised the Dragon Blade.
The execution priest stepped forward carrying an ancient silver bowl.
"According to the old law..."
He announced.
"The blood of the final dragon caller shall seal the kingdom forever."
The blade touched my throat.
A single drop of blood slid onto the black marble floor.
Nothing happened.
The king frowned.
He pressed harder.
Another drop fell.
This time...
The palace trembled.
A deep rumble echoed beneath the mountain.
The stained-glass windows vibrated.
Candles extinguished all at once.
Every noble turned toward the cathedral ceiling.
Another roar.
Far below.
Older than the kingdom itself.
The king's face lost its color.
"No..."
The royal historian whispered.
"It can't be."
The marble floor cracked open directly beneath my feet.
Blue light poured upward.
Then something enormous emerged.
A dragon.
Not the terrifying beast described in royal stories.
Its scales shimmered like moonlight.
Its eyes never left mine.
Guards raised their spears.
The dragon ignored every one of them.
Instead...
It lowered its massive head until its nose rested gently against my chained hands.
Then it wrapped its tail protectively around me.
The entire throne room froze.
The oldest knight in the kingdom slowly removed his helmet.
He stared at the dragon in disbelief.
Then quietly knelt.
"The Guardian has chosen."
Within seconds...
Hundreds of soldiers followed.
Only one man remained standing.
The king.
And for the first time in his reign...
Fear was written across his face.
STORY – PART 2
The dragon's golden eyes never left King Aldric.
Not with hatred.
With recognition.
The ancient royal historian slowly approached, carrying a dust-covered scroll no one had opened in generations.
His hands trembled as he read aloud.
"When the Crown is claimed through blood instead of honor, the Last Guardian shall awaken and kneel only before the rightful heir."
The throne room fell completely silent.
Aldric laughed.
"A fairy tale."
But nobody else laughed.
The dragon turned away from him.
Instead, it gently nudged me toward the throne.
Every step I took caused the glowing cracks across the marble floor to spread farther.
The Dragon Blade slipped from Aldric's hand.
It landed at my feet.
Without thinking, I picked it up.
The blue light surrounding the blade shifted to brilliant silver.
The royal historian gasped.
"It has accepted her."
The queen mother slowly stood.
Tears streamed down her face.
"I knew."
Everyone turned toward her.
She looked at me.
"You were born the same night the previous queen disappeared."
She removed an emerald pendant from beneath her gown.
Inside was a tiny portrait.
A woman holding a newborn baby.
Me.
Aldric staggered backward.
"No..."
His voice cracked.
"That's impossible."
The queen mother closed her eyes.
"You were never meant to inherit this kingdom."
Twenty-three years earlier, Aldric had staged a coup, murdering his older sister—the true queen—or so he believed.
Unknown to him, the queen's newborn daughter had escaped through hidden tunnels beneath the palace.
The child had been raised by the dragon keepers.
By my family.
The people Aldric later hunted to extinction.
Everything he'd feared...
Everything he'd tried to erase...
Had survived.
Me.
The dragon lowered itself before the throne.
Not to Aldric.
To me.
The nobles understood immediately.
One after another...
They knelt.
Aldric drew his dagger.
"This kingdom is mine!"
Before he could take another step, the dragon released a single thunderous roar.
The force shattered every stained-glass window.
Aldric dropped the dagger.
Not from fear.
But because he finally realized no army remained loyal to him.
Months later, I was crowned beneath the same cathedral ceiling.
The dragon rested peacefully outside the palace instead of beneath it.
My first royal decree abolished the ancient law requiring dragon callers to hide or die.
The surviving dragon keepers returned home.
Forests once burned for fear of dragons became protected sanctuaries.
Children grew up hearing the true history instead of the king's version.
Years later, visitors often ask why the Dragon Blade still hangs above the throne.
The answer is carved beneath it.
"A crown taken by fear never lasts.
A kingdom protected by trust never falls."
And every sunrise, the silver dragon can still be seen circling the palace towers—not guarding a ruler.
But guarding the truth.
