The damp vinyl squeaked under his bare feet. He bypassed three pairs of evenly matched sparring partners, cutting a direct path toward the back corner where Arthur was currently trying to execute a slow, deliberate pivot. "Yo, old-timer. " Darius called out. His voice was loud, designed to carry over the thump of the heavy bags and the ambient hip-hop music playing from the gym's blown-out speakers. Arthur stopped mid-pivot.

He wavered slightly, catching his balance by leaning on his right leg. He turned to face the noise. Cole slowly lowered the Thai pads. He didn't step in front of Arthur. He didn't square up.

He merely relaxed his shoulders, his arms hanging loosely at his sides. His eyes, dark and heavy-lidded, finally shifted to look at Darius. They were completely vacant. "Can I help you, son? " Arthur asked, his tone polite but guarded. "Just looking for some fresh rounds, man. " Darius said, stopping a few feet away.

He crossed his thick arms, the tribal tattoos flexing on his biceps. "Everyone else in here is gassed out. Thought maybe you wanted to move around. Test that hardware out. " He nodded disrespectfully toward Arthur's carbon fiber leg. Arthur offered a tight, polite smile.

The kind of smile you give a misbehaving child. "I appreciate the offer, but I'm just doing some light pad work tonight. Balance isn't quite there for live sparring. You go on ahead. " It was a clear, graceful out, an honorable refusal, but Darius's ego didn't deal in grace. To Darius, a refusal was a challenge to his authority.

He chuckled, a wet condescending sound. "Come on, Pops. Don't use the leg as an excuse. It's just light movement, flow rolling. I'll go super easy on you, promise. " "I said no, thank you. " Arthur repeated.

The warmth left his voice. The old staff sergeant was bleeding through the polite civilian exterior. Darius took a step forward, invading their designated mat space. "Look, man, you're taking up prime real estate over here just playing patty-cake. If you're on the mats, you got to work.

Let's go. Put your hands up. " Greg, noticing the commotion from across the room, started walking over. "Hey Darius. " Greg called out nervously. "Leave Arthur alone. He's doing rehab work. " Darius ignored the gym owner.

He was entirely fixated on Arthur. He wanted the older man to flinch. He wanted to assert dominance. "Rehab? " Darius sneered. "Right.

Hey, if you can't handle the heat, stay out of the kitchen, right? " Darius stepped into Arthur's personal space and reached out, slapping Arthur on the left shoulder. He intended it to be a patronizing shove, a physical punctuation to his bullying. But Arthur was missing his left leg below the knee. His balance was entirely dependent on a delicate distribution of weight. The sudden forceful shove to his left side threw his center of gravity completely off.

Arthur's eyes went wide. His good foot scrambled on the slick vinyl, trying to find purchase. The carbon fiber pylon twisted awkwardly in its socket. The joint locked. He fell.

Hard. Arthur hit the mat with a sickening thud, his shoulder taking the brunt of the impact, his head snapping back and bouncing off the high-density foam. The metal mechanisms of his prosthetic let out an ugly grinding scrape against the floor. The entire gym went dead silent. The hip-hop music suddenly seemed deafening in the vacuum of human noise.

Nobody threw a punch. Nobody moved. Every eye in the room was locked on the back corner. Arthur groaned, clutching his shoulder. He closed his eyes, overwhelmed by a sudden intense wave of humiliation.

He wasn't seriously injured, but the sheer indignity of lying on his back, his artificial leg twisted at an unnatural angle in front of a room full of young, healthy men, burned like acid in his chest. Darius looked down at him. For a fraction of a second, a flicker of panic crossed his face. He hadn't meant to drop the old man that hard, but the panic was instantly swallowed by his fragile pride. He couldn't look weak.

He couldn't apologize, not in front of the whole gym. "Whoa, easy there, Grandpa. " Darius said, forcing a loud, barking laugh. He pointed a gloved finger at Arthur. "Got to keep your base. Your core is weak.

That's what happens when you don't spar. " He looked around the room, expecting someone to chuckle with him. No one did. Cole moved. He didn't rush. He didn't shout.

He knelt beside Arthur with a smooth, fluid grace. Cole gently supported the back of Arthur's neck, helping the older man sit up. He checked Arthur's pupils. He ran a quick, professional hand over Arthur's shoulder to check the collarbone. Then reached down and expertly realigned the carbon fiber socket of the prosthetic, snapping the pin back into its proper groove.

"I'm fine, Cole. " Arthur whispered, his voice trembling with suppressed rage and embarrassment. "I'm all right. Just help me up. " Cole gripped Arthur's forearm and hoisted him to his feet with seemingly zero effort. He steadied the veteran until Arthur nodded, indicating he had his balance. Then Cole turned around.

He didn't take a fighting stance. He just stood there looking at Darius. Darius puffed out his chest stepping forward again to close the distance. He was 4 inches taller than Cole and easily 30 lbs heavier. "What's your problem mute? " Darius demanded.

"Dude tripped. I barely touched him. You got something to say? " Cole stared at him. The silence stretched. It wasn't the tense dramatic silence of a movie stand-off.

It was the heavy suffocating silence of a predator assessing a very loud very stupid piece of meat. Cole's eyes didn't look at Darius's face. They scanned Darius's collarbones, his hips, his knees, his jawline. He was reading the biomechanics of the man in front of him. "Hey! " Darius yelled stepping closer shoving a finger at Cole's chest.

"I'm talking to you. " Cole slowly reached down and unstrapped the heavy leather Thai pads from his forearms. He let them drop to the mat. They hit the floor with two heavy dead thuds. He took one step forward placing himself directly between Darius and Arthur. "You wanted fresh rounds. " Cole said.
