Fowler, finally overcoming his initial shock, puffed out his chest and marched toward the counter. "Now listen here, Admiral, or whatever you are. That woman in the back is a civilian who presented forged documents and was driving on a suspended license. This is a local jurisdiction and you have no authority to barge in here. " Kavanaugh didn't even look at Fowler. He simply raised a single finger pointing at him while keeping his eyes locked on Brody.

"Silence your subordinate, Sergeant, before my agents charge him with obstruction of a federal investigation. " One of the NCIS agents stepped forward, sliding a crisp federal warrant across the counter. "We have a federal jurisdiction over this matter under the National Defense Authorization Act and the Uniform Code of Military Justice as it pertains to the unlawful detainment of an active-duty military officer and the destruction of federal property. " Fowler's face went completely slack. The bravado melted away, replaced by a sudden, sickening realization. She wasn't lying. "Release Lieutenant Commander Linwood, now. " Kavanaugh ordered, the temperature in the room dropping 10°.

Brody scrambled. He nearly tripped over his own boots as he grabbed the heavy ring of cell keys from the pegboard. "Yes, sir. Right away, sir. Just a big misunderstanding, Admiral. " "It is not a misunderstanding," Kavanaugh replied, his gaze tracking Fowler, who was now sweating profusely.

"It is a felony. " The heavy metal door of the holding cell swung open. Melina remained seated on the concrete bench, her posture as perfect as it had been an hour ago. She looked up, her expression calm, showing no surprise when Vice Admiral Cavanaugh stepped into the dimly lit corridor, flanked by the terrified Sergeant Brody. "Commander Linwood," Cavanaugh said, his stern expression softening just a fraction. "I trust these men haven't harmed you. " "I am uninjured, Admiral," Melina replied, standing up and smoothing out her gray hoodie.

"Though I am missing my Department of Defense identification card. " Cavanaugh turned his head slowly, looking at Brody. "Where is the Commander's CAC card? " Brody looked like he was about to be sick. He stammered, wiping sweat from his forehead. "Uh, Officer Fowler. He He handled the arrest, sir. " Melina stepped out of the cell, joining her commanding officer.

Together, they walked back into the main lobby. The entire dynamic of the room had shifted. Fowler was standing near the wall, boxed in by two towering Navy Master-at-Arms who watched his every twitch. "Officer Fowler," Melina said, her voice clear and ringing with confidence. "Care to explain to the Admiral where my ID is? " Fowler opened his mouth, but no words came out.

His arrogant smirk was completely gone, replaced by the wide-eyed panic of a cornered animal. "He snapped it in half, Admiral," Melina reported officially. "He claimed it was a forgery. He then tossed the pieces into my rental vehicle before forcefully detaining me without proper cause. The lead NCIS agent stepped forward holding up a clear plastic evidence bag.

Inside rested the two jagged broken halves of Melina's military ID. We dispatched a team to County Road 9 to secure the commander's vehicle, sir. We found this on the floorboard. Furthermore, the vehicle was equipped with an interior dashcam standard in that specific rental fleet. We have already pulled the cloud footage.

It clearly shows Officer Fowler destroying the federal document and using excessive force. The silence in the room was deafening. Fowler looked at the broken plastic in the bag, the concrete proof of his monumental arrogance. "Officer Darren Fowler," the NCIS agent continued, his voice sharp and bureaucratic. "You are hereby under federal investigation for the destruction of government property, civil rights violations under the color of law, and the unlawful detainment of a United States military officer.

At that exact moment, the precinct doors opened again. This time, it wasn't the military. It was Sheriff David Higgins, the elected head of Brunswick County law enforcement, looking furious. He had a coat thrown hastily over his pajamas. "Brody, what in the name of God is going on here? " Sheriff Higgins roared, looking at the heavily armed sailors occupying his station.

Kavanaugh turned to face the sheriff. "Sheriff Higgins, your deputies have unlawfully detained one of my top naval intelligence officers and destroyed federal property. I am taking my officer home. You, however, have a massive problem on your hands. Higgins looked at Melina, then at the NCIS agents, and finally at Fowler.

The sheriff's face turned crimson. He marched directly up to Fowler, getting inches from his face. "I told you, Fowler. " Higgins hissed, spit flying from his lips. "I told you your cowboy attitude was going to cost you one day, you absolute fool. " Higgins turned to Brody. "Strip his badge.

Relieve him of his sidearm. " "Fowler, you are suspended without pay, effective immediately, pending federal indictment. " Fowler's hands shook as he reached up, unpinning the silver shield from his chest. He handed it to Brody, his eyes glued to the floor. The bully had been entirely broken, crushed by the reality that there were people in the world possessing power he could not intimidate. "Sheriff. " Cavanaugh said, adjusting his cuffs. "My legal team at the Pentagon will be in contact with the Department of Justice by 0800 hours.

I suggest you get your house in order. " "Yes, Admiral. " "You have my deepest apologies, Commander Linwood. " Sheriff Higgins said, looking directly at Melina. "This does not represent the values of this county. " "Ensure it never happens to anyone else, Sheriff. " Melina replied coolly. "Not everyone has an Admiral on speed dial. " With that, Melina turned and walked toward the front doors. The Master-at-Arms parted, creating a path for her. The cool night air rushed in, sweeping away the stale, oppressive stench of the station.

She walked out into the flashing red and blue lights of the NCIS vehicles, her dignity intact, her resilience proven. Vice Admiral Kavanaugh walked beside her, placing a respectful hand on her shoulder. "You handled yourself flawlessly, Melina, as expected. " "Just following protocol, sir. " Melina smiled, feeling the exhaustion finally creeping back into her bones. "Though I think I'm going to need a ride to my mother's house. My rental car is still on County Road 9. " Kavanaugh chuckled, gesturing to a massive black SUV idling by the curb.

"Your chariot awaits, Commander. Take a few days off. You've earned it. " Inside the station, Darren Fowler sat on the very concrete bench Melina had occupied just moments ago, his hands cuffed in front of him. The heavy metal door clanged shut, the sound echoing through the empty hallway.

He was no longer a cop. He was a federal suspect. The storm he had foolishly summoned had washed away everything, leaving nothing but the cold, harsh reality of justice.
